  • IMS, DTGS and EVA: Key Events of the Information Society and Technology Week

    Last week, the Information Society and Technology Week took place in St. Petersburg. ITMO University hosted three of its events: the 22nd united conference “Internet and Modern Society” (IMS-2019), the second international conference “Digital Transformations & Global Society” (DTGS-2017), and the interdisciplinary conference “EVA (Electronic Imaging & the Visual Arts) 2019 Saint Petersburg”. Some of the seminars and plenary sessions took place under the aegis of several conferences at once. For example, the open discussion on data, digital culture and digital society took place as part of the “Internet and Modern Society” conference and “EVA 2017 Saint Petersburg” conference.   • Why There Are So Many Online Petitions Today – And How to Make Them Work

    ITMO University has recently hosted the international conference Digital Transformation & Global Society (DTGS), which brought together experts in social informatics, e-governance, political communication and new media from the US, the UK and Russia. The main event of DTGS was a plenary session attended by Stephen Coleman, a professor of political communication at the University of Leeds, and the top experts in e-governance from the Higher School of Economics, the St. Petersburg State University and ITMO University. Participants discussed the effect of technology on the active political and social lives of citizens, why online petitions have gained popularity in the recent times, and how these methods can be made more effective.

  • Information Society and Technology Week

    What is e-democracy and what is the future of e-government? What can computer linguistics tell us about? And how can information technology help us save library funds and transform museums? These and many other questions will be discussed at the Information Society and Technology Week, which is aimed at experts in the field of e-government, law, economics, linguistics, psychology and philosophy. The event will last till June 2 and will be host to a range of sessions and workshops. Stephen Coleman, a Professor of Political Science at the University of Leeds, a leading theorist in the field of e-democracy and new media will be one of the key speakers. He will present his research and his new book “Can the Internet Strengthen Democracy?”.

    Today, executing financial operations often requires the use of identifiers to clearly specify the different financial instruments used - such as equities, bonds, options and so on. But these IDs may be different in various organizations and countries, which can lead to mistakes and slowing down financial operations. At the recent Digital Transformation & Global Society Conference hosted by ITMO University, the Bloomberg experts Richard  Beatch  and Inessa Collier, as well as Dr. Yuri Lipuntsov, Associate Professor at the Moscow State University, spoke about new standards of identification of financial instruments and how they can help solve such problems.
