The two-day conference included trainings by Russian end international experts who shared event management strategies, peculiarities of communication with Russian and international media, and methods of collaboration with students and professors. “5-100” participants also presented their achievements. Thus Dmitry Malkov, head of Scientific Communications Office of ITMO University, commented on those events that aimed to interest public in science. Having organized exhibition “Magic of Light”, “Open University” project and science museum in the Lakhta Center building ITMO University contributed to academic achievements promotion. Thanks to these projects science becomes more accessible for wide audience.

 Participants also visited “Webometrics” Workshop presented by Isidro F. Aguillo, head of “Cybermetrics Lab,” research group of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). Mr. Aguillo shared how to move forward at this ranking.

“Usually Russian Universities don`t communicate with international public. I offer a principle “glocal = global + local.” Speak English more and write in English even if your level is not high.  “Webometrics” estimates not only web sites, it ranks universities. Apart from PR and IT offices all departments have develop and promote their universities,” noted Mr. Aguillo.

Aleksey Glazyrin, “Newton” Group CEO, presented analysis results of research activities of “5-100” participants and reputation survey results.

“Russian universities become more effective, their professors are more skilled now. I want to mark Tomsk State University, Kazan Federal University and ITMO University as the most developed “5-100” participants,” noted Mr. Glazyrin.

According to Elena Chernyshkova, executive director of “5-100” project office, universities have to be recognizable. Nowadays more and more school leavers are going to enter universities. It is very important to attract them.

“Gifted students and professors have opportunity to study and work at any university in the world. Thus universities contend for them because successful researchers and professors are the most valuable resource,” said Ms. Chernyshkova.

Apart from advantages Elena Chernyshkova also commented on Russian higher education system`s problems.

“Leading Russian universities are not popular with international academic community. It is necessary to take part in international research projects and publish more papers in popular scientific journals. “5-100” project office assists Russian universities providing special trainings and programs. We help our researchers to take part in international exhibitions and conferences. Under the leadership of “5-100” universities participate in multiple joint programs,” noted Elena Chernyshkova.
