Glass Microparticles Enhance Solar Cell Efficiency

Researchers from ITMO University suggested a new solar cell coating that combines features of an electrode and those of a light-trapping structure. The coating enabled researchers to cut down on reflected light and avoid solar cell overheating, thus increasing its overall efficiency by 20 percent. Moreover, the suggested method may be attractive for industrial applications due to its relatively low cost and simplicity. The research was published in Optics Letters.

High Speed Video Precisely Captures Blood Cell Velocity

Researchers at ITMO University in Saint Petersburg, Russia, have developed a non-invasive high-speed video capillaroscopy system that can precisely measure the velocity of blood cells flowing through capillaries in the skin around a fingernail. The technique could be useful in assessing cardiovascular conditions.

Algorithm says Trump is a bachelor!

Russia – Researchers from ITMO University in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and National University of Singapore have come up with an algorithm to determine Internet users’ marital status with 86% precision by means of combining data from three social media platforms. The scientists believe that their findings will help make more detailed human psychological portraits in future. While testing, however, the programme showed a surprising result: it identified the US president, Donald Trump, who is married, as single – and there's a reason to it.

This Algorithm Mines Instagram For 'Authentic' Travel Experiences

“Tourist” is practically a dirty word these days. Tourists are loud. Tourists are rude. Tourists are ignorant. Tourists are poorly dressed, selfie stick-wielding cliches. Computer scientists at ITMO University in St Petersburg, Russia, have developed a high-tech answer. They found a way to distinguish between Instagram users living in St. Petersburg and visiting tourists based on how they use social media, then developed an algorithm that mines the app’s publicly available data to create a “genuine” locals’ guide.
