Rostelecom tests equipment for quantum communications

Russian national operator Rostelecom has completed the first stage of testing of equipment for quantum communications on its network. The tests have confirmed the possibility of using quantum key distribution on Rostelecom's existing infrastructure. They were carried out in cooperation with St Petersburg's ITMO University and the Moscow technology park Skolkovo.

Scientists develop method to make radio-controlled enzymes

Scientists from ITMO University’s SCAMT laboratory developed a method to enhance the activity of enzymes by using radio frequency radiation. The method requires making a special complex consisting of enzymes and magnetic nanoparticles. The particles can adsorb radio emission and convert it to heat, resulting in enzymatic processes acceleration by more than four times. Such method can be used to create radio-controlled biochemical systems and adjust metabolism in living organisms.

Egyptian Pharaoh ‘HIDDEN’ inside Great Pyramid’s ‘secret chamber’, historian reveals

Earlier this year it was reported scientists found that the 481-foot building is capable of creating pockets of high energy in its inner rooms and at its base.

The ITMO University and the Laser Zentrum Hannover researchers plans to use the results to design nanoparticles, which will be used to develop sensors and highly efficient solar cells.

Physicists discover a new way of resonance tuning for nonlinear optics

A research team from ITMO University and the Australian National University has discovered that different metasurfaces exhibit the same behavior provided a symmetry breaking is introduced to their unit cells “meta-atoms”. Asymmetry of meta-atoms results in high-quality (high Q) resonances in the transmittance spectra of metasurfaces. Such resonances are capable of multiple amplification of external signals. By manipulating the asymmetry, scientists were able to control the resonances and thus an optical response, which is highly desirable for practical applications.

Scientists developed new contactless method of measuring blood flow in hands

The research team from ITMO University proposed a new contactless method for measuring blood flow in the upper limbs. The method is based on video recording of the skin surface under green light measuring the absorption of red blood cells. This helps to see how effective the circulatory system and the blood flow regulation are. The experimental results showed that the proposed method is not inferior in accuracy to the traditional one. However, it is easier to use, cheaper and fits more patients.

Physicists design new antenna for next-generation super-sensitive magnetometers

Scientists from ITMO University and Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences have proposed a new microwave antenna that creates a uniform magnetic field in large volume. It is capable of uniform, coherent addressing of the electronic spins of an ensemble of nanodiamond structure defects. This can be used to create super-sensitive magnetic field detectors for magnetoencephalography in the study and diagnosis of epilepsy and other diseases.

Russia, Uzbekistan Collaborate on Blockchain Adoption

The Russian National Intellectual Property Transactions Coordination Center (IPChain) and the municipal authorities of Tashkent, the capital city of Uzbekistan, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate on copyright protection by leveraging blockchain technology. The partnership aims to introduce IPChain solutions as DLT standards meant to protect patent records in Uzbekistan, the authorities of which want to rely on the technology to monetize IP rights. IPChain is a blockchain-oriented nonprofit established last year by the Skolkovo Foundation and the Russian Organization for Intellectual Property (VOIS). Other members of the organizations include the National Research University “Higher School of Economics,” Russian Union of Right-Holders, ITMO University, and Russian Authors’ Society among others.
