The 2nd International Forum “The Arctic. Made in Russia” took place in Tver Region, Russia in early March. Organized by the Federal Agency for Youth Affairs the forum brought together many young specialists from different countries. According to Elena Bykovskaya, more than 200 researchers applied for participation and even 36 were invited for competing in challenges.
The participants were divided into several teams consisted of 15 specialists. Each team included engineers, ecologists, economists, drill-operators, geologists and managers as well as representatives of Russia's northern regions and countries belonging to Arctic Council. Taking part in the case competition young experts developed solutions for sea gas fields in the Arctic.
“Using initial data such as location of extraction units, climate conditions, geological parameters, estimated gas reserves, gas composition, an infrastructure of a region and so forth, the participants provided technical, ecological, economic and other estimations. Personally I analyzed the following ecological factors: the proximity of landscape protection areas, gas field`s influence on fish populations that are the important part of sustenance of north nations and other issues,” said Elena Bykovskaya.
Apart from the contest the participants were also offered to follow the educational module. They attended lectures given by researchers of Russian Academy of Sciences, directors of specialized universities and heads of corporations connected with development of Russia`s Arctic region.
The judges evaluated the projects according to such criteria as technological solution, feasibility report and presentation. Ms. Bykovskaya in alliance with her colleagues took the first place and was awarded with internship in Gazprom Company. The participants also could choose other internship programs.
Elena Bykovskaya also noted that specialists in various fields can apply their knowledge for developing the Arctic. There are experts in industrial security, engineering, IT, ecology and others who can work in the Arctic regions.
“Nowadays young experts are hardly interested in these projects. That is why taking part in the forum I suggested to make a website, which will make the work in the Arctic popular with young specialists. I also submitted an application for a grant to launch this idea,” noted Ms. Bykovskaya.
