• How Music Affects Our Brain

But new discoveries in understanding the physical effect of music on the human brain are made all the time. It has been revealed that music can modify the brain structure, affect the taste of beer, and make men more attractive; it also turns out that the upbeat Beatles and the depressive Nortt are equally as good at making us feel better. • The Night of Light: Gatchina Hosts International Light Art Festival

  This year marks the fourth time that the Night of Light took place in Gatchina; yet, this time was special - the event has changed its format and grew into a full-fledged Light Art festival. 14 light installations from the festival's contestants and more than twenty exhibits of the non-competition program were placed all around Gatchina's Palace Park. ITMO University's Higher School of Light Design acted as the festival's partner and submitted four of its projects for the unique festival.

• “Night of Light” in Gatchina

  On the night of August 12 to August 13, the “Night of Light” will be held in the town of Gatchina. This year the event will expand significantly and turn into a full-fledged festival of light art. The territory of the Gatchina State Museum-Reserve will be home to 20 light installations by participants from Russia and Lithuania; 20 more installations will be presented outside of the main competition. This year’s theme is “Laboratory of Dreams”. Students from ITMO’s Higher School of Lighting Design will present three projects at the festival; their works are included in the short-list for the light installation competition that will be held during the event. We talked to the teams to learn more about their projects and find out about their meaning and structure.

• Art&Science: Optical Devices In Fine Arts And Design's Role In Evolution

  ​Last Saturday, the final "Art&Science: Art, Science, Museum" open lecture took place at the General Staff Building of the State Hermitage Museum. The project, supervised by ITMO University and staff from the State Hermitage Museum, has been around for nine months; during each of its events, leading international experts presented research in the field of art and science. This time, the speakers were Charles M. Falco from the University of Arizona and Paola Antonelli, Director of R&D at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York City. • Hermitage’s Head Clocksmith on his Work, Laboratory and the Importance of Restoring Technological Marvels

  Antique timepieces and clockworks are definitely great monuments to human mind and fantasy, especially those like the ones you can see at the State Hermitage Museum. Grand and miniature, shaped into the dome of heaven or a small bird, with six clock hands or a mechanical orchestra inside — each of them is unique and reflects the history of both the technological progress and the human strive for beauty. Mikhail Guriev, Hermitage's leading clocksmith and head of the Laboratory for Scientific Restoration of Timepieces and Musical Mechanisms shared on different clock's wondrous features, on their clock collection's history and on who might be interested in tours on clockworks.
