ITMO Fellow Eugene Smirnov On Colloid Chemistry Applications: From Space Telescopes to FoodTech
Remember the James Webb Telescope? The one that’s recently discovered its first exoplanet? It’s an impressive machine that has 18 mirrors covered with an ultrathin layer of gold. It takes 3.5 years of polishing to produce one such mirror, which then has to be linked to the others and delivered to the orbit. Wouldn’t it be great if we could just make a liquid mirror out of nanoparticles? Sounds like a dream, but colloid chemistry can get us closer to it. What other possibilities does it open? We asked ITMO Fellow Eugene Smirnov, a scientist with international experience from Switzerland, Germany, and China, who now heads a research group at ITMO.

PhD Student Anna Baldina: You Get to Feel 100% Fulfilled and Happy at ITMO
Having entered ITMO as a Master’s student, Anna Baldina started doing research from the get-go. During her studies here, she developed the concepts and curricula for two Master’s and one Bachelor’s program. Moreover, she was part of the team behind the university’s new major research unit, the Infochemistry Scientific Center. Since then, Anna has had the chance to work in the industry and opted to return to ITMO to continue with her studies and research career, fulfilling her childhood dream of being paid to study. Why did she choose science over industry? And what career prospects does she see at ITMO? Find the answers in this ITMO.NEWS interview.

A World Inside a Molecule: How Chemistry Paves the Way for Secure Data Storage
With each year, the volume of data grows ever higher; according to Statista, in 2022 the total of all information accumulated by humans has amounted to approximately 97 zettabytes. By 2025, this number is expected to reach a whopping 180 zettabytes. Today, most data is stored on hard drives, flash drives, and cloud services. But are these media all that reliable? What else can scientists offer us – and how does chemistry come into play? George M. Whitesides, one of the most highly cited chemists of our time, shared his insights in a recent lecture – and ITMO.NEWS is here with the cliffnotes.

ITMO Researchers Suggest All-Optical Data Processing Method Using Heating
Metal-organiс frameworks (MOFs) are a new class of compounds that is famous for its unique properties. They have been considered a functional material for gas adsorption, industrial membranes, and catalysts; however, researchers from ITMO have gone further and decided to zone in on MOFs’ optical properties. In a recent paper, they demonstrated that thanks to MOFs’ flexibility, these properties can be changed when subjected to lasers. This new effect can pave the way for all-optical data encoding, transfer, and storage.

Paving the Way to Next-Gen Devices: Your Guide to Metaphotonics
It's rare for fields like physics, chemistry, biology, and computer science to function in isolation, most scientific breakthroughs these days involve an interdisciplinary approach. Metaphotonics is one of such field that has the potential to revolutionize traditional views of optical and electronic devices. How? In this article, ITMO’s Sergey Makarov, head of the Laboratory of Hybrid Nanophotonics and Optoelectronics and the frontier laboratory Solution-Processable Laser Diodes, and Ivan Sinev, a researcher at the International Research Center for Nanophotonics and Metamaterials help us discover this nascent field.
