• ITMO University Lecturers on Benefits of Using Online Courses in Teaching

  Today’s educators are becoming more and more active in integrating online learning in the traditional educational process. Many of ITMO University’s lecturers are also authors of online courses on the Open Education learning platform and use them in their everyday teaching as a replacement to some in-class lectures or an expansion of the offline learning content. ITMO.NEWS met the innovators to talk about why online courses shouldn’t be seen as a threat to conventional education, how this learning format could change the teacher-student interaction, and what makes it so convenient.

• Internship at MIT: Active Learning, Virtual Reality, and Entrepreneurial Skills

  A group of ITMO University teachers spent two weeks at MIT doing an internship on modern educational techniques. The purpose of the internship was to help its participants gain practical teaching skills and answer some important questions such as what are the ways to increase students’ productivity, how to implement online learning in the classroom, and why is it important to give students the opportunity to put the acquired knowledge into practice?

• EduEnvi: Education in Sustainable Waste Management in Russia and Kazakhstan

  According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment of the Russian Federation, the amount of waste from production and consumption in Russia totaled 5 billion tonnes last year. The statistics indicate that only 50% of waste is recovered, and only 7-8% of waste is recycled. There is no waste management system in any of the regions, and existing educational programs in the field of environmental protection are generally insufficient or ineffective. Six Russian and Kazakh universities are collaborating with universities in Finland, Denmark, and Spain to solve this problem. The developers of the project, co-funded by the Erasmus+ Program, are going to launch eight online courses in biotechnologies and waste management. The project will last for three years, and the courses may become part of several universities’ Master's programs.
