M-Cube Project: Solution for Faster and Safer MRI
Last year, an International Research Consortium, which includes ITMO University’s Center for Nanophotonics and Metamaterials, was awarded a European Horizon 2020 project. The M-Cube project unites scientific groups and companies from seven countries working on new antenna technology for 7T MRI. In the coming two years and a half, scientists plan to create a device which could be used to accelerate MRI. ITMO.NEWS talked to the scientists about the project and the results. Among the scientists who came to ITMO University were Dr. Redha Abdeddaim, an assistant professor at Aix-Marseille University – Institut Fresnel, one of the scientific coordinators of the project, Dr. Marc Dubois, a postdoc at Aix-Marseille University – Institut Fresnel, and Dr. Julien de Rosny, a senior scientist at CNRS – Institut Langevin.

ITMO Researchers Develop Wireless Signal Transfer Method for MRI
Scientists from ITMO University are the first to prove the possibility of wireless signal transmission in magnetic resonance imaging. Moreover, the resulting images are of even better quality than those produced using the common method of signal transmission over radio-frequency cables. This technology has already passed the first clinical trials on volunteers at the Almazov National Medical Research Center in St. Petersburg. It also received an award by the American Physical Society. The results of the research were published in Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, one of the most reputable scientific journals in the field of medical MRI.

New technology allows safe MRI-diagnostics for people with implants
An international research team has developed a device capable of improving the performance of MRI units. The technology is based on local redistribution of a magnetic field with the help of a metasurface made of metal resonators. It was proven experimentally that the metasurface is capable of reducing the power required to produce high-quality images using an MRI unit. The use of MRI units of lower intensity makes it possible to make MRI diagnostics safe for people with medical implants. The results of this research are published in the latest issue of the Journal of Magnetic Resonance.

ITMO's Metamaterial MRI-Boosting Invention Praised by St. Petersburg Government
A project by scientists from ITMO’s Department of Nanophotonics and Metamaterials that aims to improve the speed and quality of MRI scanning has won the first place in a competition for innovative projects in science and higher education. The competition was organized by the administration of St. Petersburg. Winners were announced at the St. Petersburg International Innovation Forum (SPIIF). The scientists’ invention shortens the time needed to perform an MRI scan by half and makes it cheaper.

IEEE Award Winner Slobozhanyuk: “There Are No Stupid Questions in Science”
Alexey Slobozhanyuk, a postgraduate student and research associate at ITMO University’s International Laboratory “Applied Radioengineering”, has received an award from the IEEE’s Antennas and Propagation Society. Such recognition provides many opportunities for work in research institutes all over the world, yet, the winner says, he wants to give back to his alma mater and his country. New Metamaterial-Enhanced MRI Technology Successfully Tested on Human Subjects
Scientists from the Netherlands and Russia designed and tested a new metasurface-based technology for enhancing the local sensitivity of MRI scanners on human test subjects for the first time. The metasurface consists of thin resonant strips arranged periodically. Placed under a patient's head, it provides much higher image quality from the local brain region. The results, published in Scientific Reports, show that the use of metasurfaces can potentially reduce image acquisition time, make the procedure more comfortable for patients and acquire higher resolution images to allow diseases to be diagnosed at an earlier stage.
