• Urban Change Week: Do Your Bit to Change the City for the Better

  Quick notifications about environmental disasters, peer-to-peer information about coffee shops and bakeries, a catalog of trees, and a map of the city’s emotions and urban problems… With the use of geoinformation systems, you can gather data about literally everything concerning urban development. Public participation geographic information systems (GIS) combine the advantages of online surveys and public maps. Such public maps indicate, for example, that over the last 30 years, about 50% of trees in St. Petersburg have been cut out, replaced with recycling drop-off centers and problematic areas. As part of the Urban Change Week held in St. Petersburg on April 17-20, project managers discussed the issue of blind spots and cars supplanting trees, and why it is important to report city problems. • Urban Scientist Steve Kuddins on Overfencing in St. Petersburg: Causes and Solutions

  City officials and representatives of the General Administration for Traffic Safety claim that placing fences improves road safety and protects the city's lawns. Still, the citizens of St. Petersburg are becoming more and more concerned with the "overfencing" problem. Do fences really decrease the number of traffic accidents? How can regular people influence the current situation? And why is involving the citizens the only way to solve this problem? Steve Kuddins, expert for ITMO's Institute of Design & Urban Studies, expanded on these questions during an open interview at the Campus Festival.

• Computer Simulation to Make Cities Cleaner

  Egor Smirnov, a graduate student at ITMO, who is currently working at ITMO’s Institute of Design & Urban Studies has come up with an algorithm for planning path networks using dynamic behavioral modeling. The project will soon be presented at the ICCS Conference in China. Egor Smirnov told ITMO.NEWS about why pedestrian networks planning is important and what ordinary people can do to solve this problem.
