Not Just Carbon-Fiber: Researcher Mohammad Jawaid on Plant-Based Composites and Their Prospects
Bamboo-based composites as a substitute for fiberglass in aircraft – or a car bumper made with natural materials. These all sound like sci-fi, but they are, in fact, quite real. Auto manufacturer Mercedes is already using plant fiber to create auto parts. These materials have several advantages: they are light, durable, and eco-friendly. It’s no surprise scientists around the globe are trying to expand their range of applications. We spoke to Mohammad Jawaid, a professor at United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) who has been studying plant-based composites for over 15 years, about these materials and the opportunities they offer. This November, he will be delivering a talk at BIOCON, an international conference organized by ITMO’s Faculty of Biotechnologies and Advanced Engineering School.

New Invention from ITMO: Materials Biodegradability Testing
ITMO scientists have suggested a system capable of testing materials for biodegradability. Their invention is a multistep installation that can detect the time and exact percentage of decomposition of various samples such as disposable tableware, coffee cups, or plastic bags. In the future, the system may become the foundation for a national biodegradability certification system in Russia.

For the Benefit of the Environment: ITMO Specialists Develop Biodegradable Food Packaging and Nutritious Plant-Based Food
Specialists from ITMO University’s School of Biotechnology and Cryogenic Systems work on a wide range of projects that are highly promising for the refrigeration, food, and waste processing industries. For instance, at the moment the scientists at the Faculty of Food Biotechnologies and Engineering are developing biodegradable coatings and packaging for food products and working on the creation of food products for different consumer categories, including vegetarians and vegans. The latter two projects are headed by Natalia Yakovchenko, senior lecturer at ITMO University. ITMO.NEWS spoke to Prof. Yakovchenko to find out more about the research, its relevance, and the environmental component.
