Tiny Orchestra: New AI Model Uses Water Vapor to Make Music
In collaboration with researchers from Tyumen State University, scientists at ITMO have created an algorithm that can decipher the behavior patterns of droplets inside a cloud dispersed over water. Research into these processes opens opportunities to create computers that can program living systems, such as bacteria clusters, or solve complex tasks unavailable to conventional computers. What’s more, the suggested neural network can transform the data into music, making it possible to “hear” the particles interacting. The resulting publication describes the first observation of particle reactions inside a levitating droplet cluster.

ITMO Fellow Muhammad Ali Abbasi Talks New 2D Nanomaterials for Wastewater Remediation, Discovering St. Petersburg, and Learning Russian
A native of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Abbasi previously worked in his home country, as well as Germany, but he chose Russia as the place to build his scientific career. Today, he is working at ITMO, developing a new class of 2D nanomaterials for the remediation of industrial and domestic wastewater from emerging organic pollutants (EOCs) – low concentrations of medicines and cosmetic products. However, modern studies indicate the potential toxicity and carcinogenic impact of such pollutants on human and aquatic life. In this interview, he also talks about the commonalities between St. Petersburg and Pakistan, the benefits of learning Russian as an Urdu speaker, and the process of doing research at the intersection of physics and chemistry.

Chemists Move One Step Closer to Artificial Cells
An international research team has devised a chemical system that initiates the formation of coacervates, complex multi-molecular structures, thanks to a hand-picked formula. The process, seen through a microscope, resembles the activity of biological organisms: molecules reproduce themselves, interact with other molecules, and produce new structures. The breakthrough will aid in creating artificial cells and advanced targeted drug delivery systems. The results of the study are published in Chem.

How Particles of Silver Darken Under the Influence of Light
It happens during the reaction between agar, melamine, and silver nitrate. After getting dried, a layer of this mixture becomes a flexible film that can be used for the detection of dangerous chemicals on the surface of fruits and vegetables.
