The 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics: Topological Phases of Matter over the Experimental Discovery of Gravitational Waves
Yesterday, on October 5th, the names of Nobel Prize Winners in Physics were announced. The prize was divided between three scientists: one half was awarded to David J. Thouless from the University of Washington, the other — jointly to F. Duncan M. Haldane from University of Washington and J. Michael Kosterlitz from Brown University. These scientists greatly contributed to theoretical discoveries of topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter. ITMO experts explain why this research was chosen and how it got ahead of results like the experimental evidence of existence of gravitational waves.
