Not Just Carbon-Fiber: Researcher Mohammad Jawaid on Plant-Based Composites and Their Prospects
Bamboo-based composites as a substitute for fiberglass in aircraft – or a car bumper made with natural materials. These all sound like sci-fi, but they are, in fact, quite real. Auto manufacturer Mercedes is already using plant fiber to create auto parts. These materials have several advantages: they are light, durable, and eco-friendly. It’s no surprise scientists around the globe are trying to expand their range of applications. We spoke to Mohammad Jawaid, a professor at United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) who has been studying plant-based composites for over 15 years, about these materials and the opportunities they offer. This November, he will be delivering a talk at BIOCON, an international conference organized by ITMO’s Faculty of Biotechnologies and Advanced Engineering School.
