• Reject All Labels: ITMO Master’s Student Finds Way to Make PET Plastic Production Eco-Friendly

  Ulyana Gabysheva, a graduate of the Laser Micro- and Nanotechnologies Bachelor’s program, has joined forces with a major PET plastic bottle manufacturer to develop a laser engraving method that will make it possible to abandon the use of labels and increase the effectiveness of the plastic recycling process.

• For the Benefit of the Environment: ITMO Specialists Develop Biodegradable Food Packaging and Nutritious Plant-Based Food

  Specialists from ITMO University’s School of Biotechnology and Cryogenic Systems work on a wide range of projects that are highly promising for the refrigeration, food, and waste processing industries. For instance, at the moment the scientists at the Faculty of Food Biotechnologies and Engineering are developing biodegradable coatings and packaging for food products and working on the creation of food products for different consumer categories, including vegetarians and vegans. The latter two projects are headed by Natalia Yakovchenko, senior lecturer at ITMO University. ITMO.NEWS spoke to Prof. Yakovchenko to find out more about the research, its relevance, and the environmental component.

  Plastic waste has become a global environmental threat. The production of plastic has seen exponential growth, increasing from 1.7 million tons in the 1950s to 335 million tons in 2016 (PlasticsEurope 2017). Incorrect disposal of this material leads to a stark upsurge of its presence in natural environments. Information about the rapidly escalating situation with marine waste is crucial for finding a solution to this global crisis and saving thousands of animal species. That’s why today a range of citizen science projects have emerged that aim to gather data about marine pollution and step up volunteer effort to clean away the rubbish where it is possible. This article presents some of the local projects by participating in which you can contribute to the solution of the global issue in question.
