• Russia’s First Portable MRI Machine Developed at ITMO

  Researchers from ITMO University have built an experimental prototype of the nation’s first portable MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scanner that is five times cheaper to install and maintain than stationary devices. The machine employs a weak magnetic field and therefore requires no distinct equipment room, cooling system, nor high-energy supply – it can be plugged into a standard socket. It also uses a built-in AI system to ensure sufficient quality and remove noise in MRI images. The portable scanner will make examination more convenient for patients with limited mobility – and generally possible for patients with metal implants due to the use of a weak magnetic field.

• The Scent of VR: New Device by ITMO University Student

  Konstantin Malyshev, a Master’s student at ITMO’s Educational Center for Graphic Technologies, created a prototype of a device that provides scents in virtual reality. With the help of this invention, one can transport themselves into Vincent van Gogh’s painting The Night Café, where the air is filled with the scent of port and coffee.
