  • ITMO Researchers Produce Artificial Optical Synapse for Enhanced AI Performance

    Scientists at ITMO University have developed an artificial optical synapse using a natural inspired semiconductor, copper exide, also known as tenorite. When exposed to laser radiation, the mineral’s crystals start to behave as biological synapses in the brain; they respond differently  to radiation based on the frequency of laser pulses, akin to synapses reacting to biologically active chemicals – neurotransmitters. The finding may open the way for next-gen processors that can imitate the function of biological neural networks; it can also accelerate AI calculations and training at lower energy costs. The results of the study were published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces.

  • ITMO Researchers Learn to Quick Control Metasurfaces With Light

    A team of researchers from ITMO University, Polytechnic University of Milan (Italy), and the University of Brescia (Italy) have developed a new approach to control the properties of metasurfaces using laser radiation. The method allows scientists to switch optical states within a picosecond, which means that they can now transmit more data in less time and build a photonic computer and more accurate medical sensors. The results of the study are published in Light: Science & Applications.

  • ITMO Joins Interuniversity Consortium for Siberian Ring Photon Source

    ITMO University has signed an agreement to join the interuniversity consortium for interaction between the Siberian Ring Photon Source Collective Use Center and universities. As part of the arrangement, the university will work with its partners to conduct educational and research projects and train future specialists for the center.

  • ITMO Scientists Come up With a Way To Protect Satellites From Space Radiation

    The scientists suggested a new material for power electronics for use on orbital spacecrafts. It’s a semiconductor based on gallium oxides and aluminum that is better at resisting space radiation. An article about it was published in Acta Astronautica.
