• New York University Professor’s Take on Future of Digital Cities

  Stanislav Sobolevsky is an Associate Professor of Practice at New York University (NYU), the Head of Urban Complexity Research Group and a co-founder of the Insight Data Labs consulting studio. His research interests include machine learning and Big Data, network analysis, human movement modeling, and the theory of differential equations. During his open lecture at ITMO University, he talked about a new scientific field, urban informatics, and in particular what issues it deals with and how it helps make cities more livable.

  Why is it that not every grant, competition or scholarship is beneficial to a student? How can participation in different camps, conferences and other scientific events help one find employment? How can contests help students learn their strengths and weaknesses? These questions have become all the more relevant with the recent start of the “I am a Professional” competition. Vasiliy Leonenko, senior lecturer at ITMO’s High-Performance Computing Department, spoke to us about the real cases that have to do with these issues, as well as emphasized on the trends in the field of mathematical modeling which have been included in the competition’s Computer and Information Sciences track.
