  • What Cells Do When They Can’t Breathe

    Can cells measure the amount of oxygen around them? And why do they need it? How do they react to the changing conditions? This evasive mechanism of an animal cell had been in the dark for a very long time. It was the work of William G. Kaelin Jr, Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe and Gregg L. Semenza that finally shed light on this mechanism, earning them the 2019 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology. Ekaterina Umnyakova, a senior researcher at the Institute of Experimental Medicine, explained what this discovery means for modern science, and especially for cancer treatment research. Her lecture took place at the Lermontov Central Library within the framework of the “Nobel Prize in the Open Living Room 2019” project.

    A group of lecturers and PhD students from the Higher School of Economics (HSE), along with a researcher from ITMO University’s Science Communication Master’s program went on an unconventional sociological expedition called “Koltushi. Into Pavlov’s scientific world.” The researchers spent two weeks observing the way employees at Pavlov Institute of Physiology work and interact with each other.   • ITMO University Physicists Discover Proof of Nobel Laureate Frank Wilczek’s Time Crystal Hypothesis

    Two ITMO University physicists – PhD student Valerii Kozin and ITMO Fellow Oleksandr Kyriienko – have described genuine time crystals in an article in Physical Review Letters. These structures’ existence was first suggested by Frank Wilczek, laureate of the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics, but other studies have asserted the impossibility of creating environments in which these crystals would exist. ITMO.NEWS spoke to Valerii Kozin to find out what time crystals really are, how the two scientists were able to prove the existence of a system in which they would exist, and what Einstein has got to do with it.

  • ITMO University Representative to Be Part of Yandex Public Interests Foundation

    Yandex is transforming its managing structure by creating a non-profit Public Interests Foundation that will be able to affect the company’s strategic decisions. The new council will include representatives of the company’s leading universities that have long been collaborating with Yandex on various projects, including ITMO University, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Higher School of Economics, Lomonosov Moscow State University and St. Petersburg State University. This non-profit foundation is to be approved at the shareholder meeting on December 20.

The lecture was part of ITMO’s Marketorium Forum and here are some of its highlights.
