This year, the Best Global Universities Rankings has welcomed 250 new participating organizations and now includes 2,000 educational institutions from 95 countries. This includes 26 Russian universities (23 in 2021). ITMO University is one of the top 10 Russian universities in the global overall ranking.

The subject rankings, too, have undergone changes: this year, there are four new subject areas – Artificial Intelligence, Education and Educational Research, Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences, and Water Resources – resulting in a total of 47.

Just as last year, ITMO is included on ten such subject rankings. This year, it holds the first place among Russian universities in six: Optics (29th globally), Condensed Matter Physics (114th globally), Computer Science (312nd globally), Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (163rd globally), Engineering (307th globally), and Electrical and Electronic Engineering (174th globally); notably, ITMO is the only Russian university included in the latter ranking.

More stats regarding ITMO’s performance in the rankings can be found on its profile page on the company’s official website.

The ranking methodology is based on 13 indicators, including publication activity, citation rate, and global and regional research reputation. Data for the ranking is provided by InCites, an online platform used to assess and compare scientific organizations and research using the Web of Science database.
