Myths and legends festival 

The annual Book Alleys are back in town for the summer. This Thursday, two of the city’s libraries are hosting a special event within the summer festival – a day full of myths and legends. What’s in store: a day full of folk music and dance performances, all kinds of creative workshops inspired by folk art, board games, and more.

Music club: Robert Plant

This time, New Holland Island’s music club will be a little different: instead of tracing the history of a genre, it will focus on Robert Plant, the lead singer of Led Zeppelin, and specifically his solo creative ventures after the band’s break-up. The session will be hosted by musician Arina Faul and will be of interest to the band’s fans, as well as to anyone curious what it can be like to build a career as a creative after you’ve arguably scored all the success goals.

The Villa of a Russian Patron

Another chance to travel without leaving the city this week – but this time, to travel in time! At the ongoing exhibition at Stroganov Palace, you can imagine yourself as a guest of a Russian art patron in the 19th century. Exquisite interiors and art pieces abound in every room (with a total of over 100 art objects on display) and, of course, history is around every corner. Some of the pieces are exhibited for the first time after extensive restoration.

Africa. Sergei Bugaev

For those familiar with contemporary Russian art, Sergei “Africa” Bugaev is something of a legend – an artist, an actor, and a musician who managed to capture the spirit of the 1980s-1990s in the Soviet Union and Russia and heavily contribute to it. For those unfamiliar with him, this exhibition is a great chance to learn more about that historical period through the paintings, sculptures, and other items created by the artist in the 40 years of his career.

Art of the Court of the Emir of Bukhara

Another travelling option for the week is the ongoing exhibition at the General Staff Building that’s the result of collaboration between the Hermitage and the Fund for the Development of Culture and Art of the Republic of Uzbekistan. With over 70 works of 19th-20th-century decorative and applied art, including interior objects, gold-embroidered clothes, and jewelry, the exhibition aims to present the vivid art of Bukhara and its role in intercultural connections.
