March for Science around the world. Thousands of scientists and supporters of science showed their discontent with “an alarming trend toward discrediting scientific consensus and restricting scientific discovery” in marches in New York City, Berlin, Sydney, Paris and other cities.
New quantum liquid crystals could speed up computers. Scientists at Caltech discovered a new state of matter - the first three-dimensional quantum liquid crystal - that may have applications in ultrafast quantum computers of the future.
3D-printing of glass possible. A new process uses mixing nanoparticles of high-purity quartz glass and a small quantity of liquid polymer and allows this mixture to be cured by light at specific points by means of stereolithography. The material, which has remained liquid, is washed out in a solvent bath, leaving only the desired cured structure. The polymer still mixed in this glass structure is subsequently removed by heating.
Self-taught artificial intelligence better than doctors at predicting heart attacks. Computers capable of teaching themselves can perform even better than standard medical guidelines, significantly increasing prediction rates. If implemented, the new method could save thousands or even millions of lives a year.
Google’s updated Earth an immersive trip. The refreshed Earth app and website feature detailed 3D imagery and new "tours" that give people a guided look at exotic locations, some with the narration by Mr. Nature himself - Sir David Attenborough.
