The NanoDisP workshop will bring together leading scientists from the academia and industry fields to discuss the latest developments in nanomaterial technologies, such as their synthesis, advanced optical, electrical, electro-optical properties, and their applications in modern displays. The display industry has seen great progress in displays involving nanomaterials in recent years, mostly in the form of quantum dots, but the scientific community continues its exploration of novel materials that can further improve image quality, efficiency and cost.

Theory and Practice in Transmission and Scanning Electron Microscopy, winter school at the University of Pisa, Italy

This University of Pisa’s winter school is aimed at introducing students to the theory and practice of modern approaches concerning cell biology, cytochemistry, molecular biology, and ultrastructure. The course consists of two parts: a theoretical part in the form of lectures covering basic and advanced techniques in transmission and scanning electron microscopy, and a practical part during which participants will work in the laboratories to contribute to the design and execution of experimental protocols regarding the main topics object of the lectures.

Winter School on Machine Learning (WISMAL 2020), Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain

This short winter school will consist of several tutorials presenting different techniques in the field of machine learning. Experimental Interaction Design: Designing Wearables for Health and Wellbeing, Tallinn University, Estonia

This Tallinn University winter school is a two-week extensive hands-on course in the field of interaction design. During the first week, students will work in groups designing low-fidelity prototypes for wearable devices that could be used for health and well-being improvement purposes. Over the course of the second week, students will work at a hardware lab, where under the guidance of tutors they will implement their projects in the form of high-fidelity prototypes using Arduino-based controllers Adafruit Flora and Gemma, as well as different sensors and actuators. The goal of the course is to enable students to create fully working, wearable prototypes.

Courses as part of the Jyväskylä Winter School of Ecology, Finland

This winter school consists of two tracks: Boreal Winter Ecology (February 10-15), which deals with physical and biotic environment dynamics in boreal and subarctic winter, individual and population level adaptation to cold environment, and effects of climate change on individuals and populations; and Introduction to Molecular Evolution (February 18-20), which will focus on the basics concepts of molecular evolution and how molecular data can be used to study phylogenetic relationships between species or lineages, as well as what kind of patterns natural selection leaves at the molecular level. Students will also learn about variation in the rate of molecular evolution among genes and lineages and the factors that underlie this variation.

This year’s National High Magnetic Field Laboratory winter school will focus on “Quantum Matter Without Quasiparticles”, a subject inspired by recent developments in condensed matter physics and beyond. These developments shed new light on open questions of quantum criticality, unconventional superconductivity, and new types of topological phases of matter. The tentative topics of the school include electron transport without quasiparticles, Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models, novel phases in twisted bilayer graphene, fracton topological phases, deconfined quantum criticality, and many-body localization.
