Tournament of Two Capitals: Schoolkids Show Off Robotics Skills at Regionals
The regional qualifying stage of the "Tournament of the Two Capitals", a robotics competition for schoolchildren, took place in St. Petersburg on November 26. More than a hundred teams built autonomous robots, which raced on a “highway”, built bridges, balanced on a swing and played "King of the Hill". On the same day, a regional qualifying stage of T2C was also held in Moscow. Teams that showed the best results in both cities will meet in mid-December at the tournament’s finals at ITMO University.

Oleg Borisov: Development Means Leaving Your Comfort Zone
At the last month's GoTech Robotics & AI pitch-session, the winner was a project by Ivan Borisov, Oleg Borisov and Vladislav Gromov, supervised by Sergei Kolyubin. The PhD students presented a multipurpose gripping unit which accounts for the drawbacks of other existing industrial robots, and were chosen from amongst 80 other projects. The robot has already attracted the interest of TRA Robotics. In addition to his work on the robot, Oleg engages in other research and educational activities. In an interview with ITMO.NEWS, the scientist spoke about the prospects of modern cyberphysics in Russia, the key tasks of robotics and gave advice on how can one find new opportunities for development.

ITMO Robotics Team Gets Gold at World Robot Olympiad 2017
The World Robot Olympiad (WRO-2017) has just come to a close in Costa Rica. The international competition for talented school and university students involves participants from more than 60 countries. ITMO’s team of school students, led by coach Igor Lositskiy, has won the gold medal in the Open category’s Senior age group. Russian teams have also claimed gold medals in all three age groups of the Regular category (as well as both silver and bronze in the Elementary age group), the bronze medal in the Robot Football competition and another gold medal in the Open category.

RoboFinist Festival: Teaching Robotics to Kids
Teachers and educators from all over the country gathered at the International Robotics Festival RoboFinist to discuss how to teach robotics in schools and make children interested in engineering and programming. The festival’s program included a roundtable discussion on the international experience in educational robotics, a symposium and competitions in several dozen categories. At the event, ITMO University had its own area where visitors could try out 3D-pens, look at holograms and get involved in childrens’ robotics.

Seldon the Robot's Rise to Fame
Seldon the Robot, whose masterful rendition of Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" has captivated the audiences of multiple robotics competitions, has spent a day in a new role - that of a civil servant. Dressed in a white shirt, a jacket and tie, he went to a meeting with the Governor of Leningrad Oblast Alexander Drozdenko and Chairman of the Regional Parliament, Sergey Bebenin. On 20 October, Seldon changed the tune - instead of hit songs, he vocalized the outline for the Oblast's 2018 budget. The robot, which was built by school students at ITMO’s Robotics Center was all over the news this week and became a star on the “Evening Urgant” late-night show. The fame hasn’t gotten to its head, as Igor Lositsky, the project’s supervisor noted.

ITMO Students Gear Up For Convoluted Machine Competition
ITMO University’s team “Arikaton” has qualified for the final stage of the Goldberg Cup, Russia’s first competition for creators of Goldberg machines – overly complicated contraptions that perform simple tasks. The team will present a machine that displays the movie “IT”, decorated in the film’s style. The competition values unique construction and unusual visual style of the machines. Its mission is to encourage young people to think creatively, build things and approach ordinary tasks from new angles.

RoboCup-2017: ITMO School Team Gets Novice Award
From July 25 to 30th, RoboCup-2017 finals were held in Nagoya, Japan. This year, for the first time in the university's history, two teams from ITMO took part in the final stage of the famous tournament. Despite being newcomers, ITMO University's School Team earned its first award - the Novice Award in the On Stage category of the RoboCup Junior league. Team members and their trainers spoke to us about how they prepared for the international contest and what difficulties awaited them at the tournament.
