ITMO PhD Student Dmitry Zhirihin Receives Prestigious IEEE Graduate Fellowship
Dmitry Zhirihin, a PhD student at ITMO University has received the Graduate Fellowship of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society. This prestigious award is annually granted to only 12 young scientists working in the field of microwave physics. The committee evaluated Dmitry’s research of topological insulators, deciding to fund his further work. At the Intersection of Biology, Chemistry, and IT: New Participants of ITMO Fellowship & Professorship Program on Their Research at ITMO
How to make scientists, constantly cooped up in their laboratories, communicate more and find new points of contact for joint work at the intersection of several fields of knowledge? IEEE Scholarship recipient Anna Kuzikova: Science is What Drives Self-improvement
Anna Kuzikova, a “Terahertz Biomedicine” Laboratory employee, who is studying at ITMO University's Department of Photonics and Optical Information Technology, has won an international competition for the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society scholarship. It is one of the most prestigious scholarships for young scientists studying radio-frequency, microwave and terahertz radiation. No more than twenty people a year receive such an award. However, this is the seventh victory of an ITMO University student in the last twenty years. The jury praised Anna for her work on the diagnosis of cancer with terahertz radiation. An ITMO.NEWS correspondent met with the honored young scientist and learned how this research can help doctors, what Anna Kuzikova is going to do after this project and why she considers competitiveness as one of the main drivers of science.

Clarivate Analytics Expert on Why Russian Researchers Are Cited Less and Universities Aren’t Included in Innovation Rankings
Today, sciento- and bibliometrics are very important: researchers worldwide are supposed to get published often and to check their papers’ citation index. However, experts note that bibliometrics is a sophisticated tool that needs to be applied properly in order to be actually useful for science and research. ITMO.NEWS met with Pavel Kasyanov, a scientometrics expert at Clarivate Analytics, the company that owns Web of Science, and found out why historians and physicists can’t be compared, why Russian researchers don’t get as many citations as their international colleagues, and why many experts criticize the Hirsch index.
