  • Citizen Science: How to Contribute to Research From the Comfort of Your Home

Citizen science is a global trend that has emerged in the recent decades. Today’s researchers often have to deal with the need to collect and process massive amounts of data. When machine learning algorithms can’t help, or when particularly thorough analysis is required, crowdsourcing comes to aid. And you don’t always need to be a specialist to take part: some projects are accessible to regular citizens or even children. In this article, we explore some of the ways you can contribute to scientific research from the comfort of your home.

  • Crash Course: the Hirsch Index

Sometimes it’s hard for junior researchers to find the information on such concepts as impact factor or citation index. In a new project by ITMO.NEWS, we explain these and other things in basic terms. This time, Pavel Kasyanov, a scientometrics expert at Clarivate Analytics, explains what the h-index is, who calculates it, and why it is no longer enough to assess the impact of a researcher.

  • ITMO’s 120th Anniversary: Scientists Look Back on the University’s History Through the Prism of Their Fields

ITMO University is celebrating its 120th birthday anniversary – it was on March 26, 1900, that a Mechanics, Optics and Watchmaking Department, which ITMO traces its history to, was opened in the Prince Nicholas Vocational School. Today, Russia’s first non-classical university is among the country’s higher education leaders and is constantly reaching new heights in international rankings. ITMO spearheads the development of both traditional subjects and new ones, and the contribution of its scientists can hardly be overestimated. It’s impossible to describe the variety of education and research areas present at the university, but ITMO.NEWS contacted several scientists so that they share the past, the present and the future of their fields at ITMO University.

  • At the Intersection of Biology, Chemistry, and IT: New Participants of ITMO Fellowship & Professorship Program on Their Research at ITMO

How to make scientists, constantly cooped up in their laboratories, communicate more and find new points of contact for joint work at the intersection of several fields of knowledge? This question is especially topical for those who work on fixed-term contracts or as part of an exchange and are thus especially intent on spending all their time on work. It is for supporting communication between different scientists coming to ITMO that the university’s Internationalization Department organizes meetups for participants of the ITMO Fellowship & Professorship program. ITMO.NEWS attended this year’s first gathering to find out more about the research pursued by the new members of the community.

  • Clarivate Analytics Expert on Why Russian Researchers Are Cited Less and Universities Aren’t Included in Innovation Rankings

Today, sciento- and bibliometrics are very important: researchers worldwide are supposed to get published often and to check their papers’ citation index. However, experts note that bibliometrics is a sophisticated tool that needs to be applied properly in order to be actually useful for science and research. ITMO.NEWS met with Pavel Kasyanov, a scientometrics expert at Clarivate Analytics, the company that owns Web of Science, and found out why historians and physicists can’t be compared, why Russian researchers don’t get as many citations as their international colleagues, and why many experts criticize the Hirsch index.
