Flexible Electronics and Sensors: Researchers Develop Improved Method for Copper Micropattern Printing
Scientists from ITMO University and the Institute of Chemistry of St. Petersburg State University have developed a more affordable and efficient method that makes printing copper micropatterns on a glass surface 100 times faster. The resulting micropatterns can be used in various devices, such as chemical sensors, flexible electronics, and anti-theft systems.

How ITMO Trains Specialists in Public Health Sciences
Last year, the university’s Center for Science Communication launched Russia’s first-ever English-language Master’s program in public health sciences. Its students train to become specialists in medical research, epidemiology, healthcare, and health economy. The program’s first students are already participating in major medical research. We spoke to Anton Barchuk, an oncoepidemiologist and head of the program, and Ksenia Spiridonova, the program’s coordinator, about the program and its benefits.

ITMO Scientists Develop Nanostructured Temperature Indicator Based on Carbon Dots and Nanocellulose
Researchers from ITMO’s ChemBio Cluster and University of Toronto discovered a nonlinear dependence of photoluminescence of carbon dots on the composition of a water and dimethyl sulfoxide solvent. The color of the same dot sample changes depending on the polarity of solvent it is placed in. Thanks to this discovery, the researchers were able to develop a portable wide-range (from -68°C to +19°C) temperature indicator, which can be used to control the storage conditions of chemical, pharmaceutical, and food products.

How Sport Affects Our Cognitive Skills
Moderate physical exercise boosts our energy by improving blood flow, raising blood sugar levels, and increasing the number of certain neurotransmitters in our brain. However, research shows that non-professional sports can positively affect not only our resource supply, but our cognitive skills, too. Is it true for all ages and health conditions? How long does it actually take to see results from exercise? And which mechanisms lay behind this process? Read on to learn what scientists from ITMO’s Center for Neuroscience in Education who have recently launched a project on students' mental well-being have to say about these and other related questions.

ITMO Scientists Train Neural Networks to Determine Solution Concentration Via Air Bubbles
Researchers from ITMO’s Infochemistry Scientific Center have devised an algorithm that can identify the concentration of water-alcohol solutions based on the shape of air bubbles. These bubbles can arise in liquids due to multiple factors, such as ultrasound. They do not remain stable and their shape can change. The scientists studied air bubbles to prove that they behave differently in solutions with various concentrations, as well as trained a neural network to record these changes and detect a solution’s concentration based on its bubble image. This can potentially help scientists take real-time measurements of the composition and concentration of various industrial raw materials.

ITMO Researchers Explore Direct Laser Writing of Nanolattices
Researchers from ITMO’s Faculty of Nanoelectronics together with their colleagues from the Lebedev Physical Institute, D. Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia, and the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI have conducted a study that showed that nanolattices possess high spectral selectivity. Their layers can be used as color filters for specific wavelength ranges, and one glass plate can contain records of up to six layers. Using this technology, the scientists were able to implement dispersive birefringent filters, which have multiple applications. For instance, they can be used to create AR/VR color displays or novel biochemical sensors for bacterial analysis.

11th Congress of Young Scientists at ITMO Brings Together 2,000+ Russian Researchers from 66 Cities
On April 4-8, ITMO University hosted the 11th Congress of Young Scientists. While the event had been held online in the past two years, it was now once again available offline, too, with 64 sessions held in the blended format. All in all, more than two thousand representatives of 160 scientific organizations and universities from 66 Russian cities took part in the event.

ITMO Researchers Developing Alternative to PCR Testing
A joint research team from ITMO University and the University of Central Florida are working on a new type of nanosensors – the so-called DNA nanomachines (nanorobots) – that can unfold RNA and DNA structures to identify pathogen-specific sequences. Unlike PCR tests, the new testing method does not require expensive equipment and special conditions and can thus be performed outside laboratories. Here is what you need to know about the novel diagnostics method.

Expert in Health Economics Ekaterina Aleksandrova on How to Evaluate Well-Being
University isn’t just a place for lectures and exams – it’s an environment where students acquire new skills, communicate, initiate new projects, and enjoy their free time. How do we make it comfortable and help every person realize their potential? Health economics researchers try to answer these and many other related questions. We talked about this field and its significance with Ekaterina Aleksandrova, head of the Higher School of Economics’ International Center for Health Economics, Management, and Policy and a research associate of ITMO Univesity’s Institute of International Development and Partnership.
