Sometimes It’s Important Just to Talk: How Volunteers of #WeAreTogether Initiative Help the Elderly During Self-Isolation
During the period of self-isolation, the #WeAreTogether (#МыВместе) initiative has started in Russia with the aim of providing support to elderly citizens with limited mobility and medical workers. Over 100,000 volunteers all over the country are helping those who are experiencing an acute need in the simplest yet vital things: food and medicines. ITMO University students and staff have also been making their contribution. For some of them, this has been their first venture into volunteering. ITMO.NEWS spoke to them to find out how the work went and why they decided to answer the appeal for help.

ITMO University’s Digital Volunteers: Who They Are and How They Transform Education Processes
Nine ITMO University students have completed a four-day training course at 20.35 University to become certified digital volunteers. During the intensive course, the students familiarized themselves with online communication services (Zoom and Discord), discovered how to organize online learning, monitor university and school students’ progress, and learned to implement gamification of study subjects using ClassDojo and Mozilla Hubs. ITMO.NEWS contacted the newly qualified digital volunteers to find out about possible applications for this knowledge and skills and the development of digital volunteering in the country.

Entrepreneur Evgeny Mutovkin on Helping Volunteers and Cooperating with His Alma Mater
Amid the spread of the novel coronavirus, ITMO’s Volunteer Center has launched an initiative to help the university’s older staff. The volunteers deliver groceries and medicines, and also help to tune in online services for those who are forced to observe a strict quarantine due to being especially at risk. Entrepreneur Evgeny Mutovkin, a former student of ITMO University, has supported the student initiative by equipping the volunteers with electric scooters rented by his company to make the delivery faster. Family to the Rescue: ITMO Volunteers Launch Effort to Help University’s Older Staff Members
It’s common knowledge that the elderly are the most susceptible to the risks of COVID-19. At the same time, they find self-isolation especially hard, as they can’t carry lots of products to their homes and need to purchase medicine more often. Members of ITMO’s Volunteer Center offer help to the university’s older staff members. Different Approaches, One Goal: International Week of Social Entrepreneurship at ITMO University
All throughout the past week at ITMO University, seven teams from Russia, the US and Switzerland were developing social projects to then present them to the judges. The students and lecturers forming part of the groups interacted with their colleagues, discussed the difference in social entrepreneurship approaches in their countries, and exchanged experiences in order to come up with the most comprehensive solution for their tasks. This Sunday, the results of the Form of Kindness award have been announced in St. Petersburg. The citizens of St. Petersburg have chosen 25 people in 25 nominations, who will help the city administration solve various social problems and support those who need help. Among the winners is a representative of ITMO University, head of ITMO’s Student Volunteer Center Andrey Zlenko.
