• MTS Lead Architect Mikhail Mishurovsky on Collaboration with ITMO

  About a year ago, the MTS company started focusing on the development of AI-based products. A research group was formed as part of this new direction. The group’s specialists create virtual assistants, incorporate AI technologies in medicine and office management, as well as carry out two joint projects with ITMO University. Mikhail Mishurovsky, the lead architect of MTS’s AI research group, gave an open lecture about the company’s key projects in the field of artificial intelligence, the collaboration with ITMO, and the specialists of the future. • New York University Professor’s Take on Future of Digital Cities

  Stanislav Sobolevsky is an Associate Professor of Practice at New York University (NYU), the Head of Urban Complexity Research Group and a co-founder of the Insight Data Labs consulting studio. His research interests include machine learning and Big Data, network analysis, human movement modeling, and the theory of differential equations. During his open lecture at ITMO University, he talked about a new scientific field, urban informatics, and in particular what issues it deals with and how it helps make cities more livable.

• Cancer Survival Guide: Oncologist Ilya Fomintsev Gives Lecture at ITMO University

  According to the statistics by the Ministry of Healthcare of the Russian Federation, over the last ten years, the number of people diagnosed with cancer has grown by 18%. Every year, cancer is identified in over 500,000 Russian citizens. While the emergence of social media has made information about cancer more accessible, this has yet to have any effect on morbidity rates. This probably has to do with most information about cancer being false. In an open lecture which was conducted as part of Pink October, the breast cancer awareness month, Ilya Fomintsev, oncologist and executive director of the "Ne Naprasno" (“not in vain” -- Ed.) cancer prevention foundation spoke about the risk factors for cancer, screening, and other associated issues.

• Scientists' New Image And Academic Mobility: Professor Pavel Belov's Take on Modern Science

  Last week, a session of The Social project that brings together people from different professions who aim to learn new things took place in one of St. Petersburg's bars.  The project was launched in Switzerland three years ago and now involves about 40,000 people in 12 countries. Its goal is de-virtualization of human communication via the concept of inclusiveness. The organizers invite people from different fields to participate in their meetups, so that the topics would not be limited to just professional interests only and the networking process would take place in a community that is interested in new ideas and trends of the future. At the recent session, Pavel Belov, Dean of Faculty of Physics and Engineering and Head of ITMO’s International Research Center for Nanophotonics and Metamaterials, gave an informal lecture in which  he shared his opinions about modern science as seen from Russia.

• University of Amsterdam Professor on the Importance of Crowd Behavior Research and Putting Minecraft to Good Use

  Human behavior analysis is one of the most important and complex contemporary research topics. It can be used for designing safe and reliable structures and spaces to help people during evacuations and other emergency situations. Working as part of a research group, a University of Amsterdam professor Michael Lees has developed a Minecraft-inspired game that was used for studying human behavior in emergencies forcing people to navigate their way through an unknown territory. Prof. Lees unveiled the findings during his ITMO University lecture, dedicated to the development of a new game-based experimental approach aimed at achieving a better scientific understanding of humans.
