Alena Shchelokova, PhD student at ITMO’s Department of Nanophotonics and Metamaterials did not shy away from leaving her home country for St. Petersburg, focusing on a new field of science, participating in a contest and going to Australia to conduct research. The young scientist spoke about how leaving one’s comfort zone can become a h abit and wh y it is essential to know your work’s worth and take pride in it.

ITMO. Future Careers: Employment Offers for ITMO Students
ITMO University recently hosted the Future Careers job fair where the university's students could get to know the different companies they can continue their careers in. After a similar event in April, each of the participating companies collected information on about 100 potential employees that they are ready to hire. Algorithm Summer School: New ITMO-STC Initiative
From August 14 to 25, ITMO hosted the first Algorithm summer school on machine learning, organized in collaboration with the STC (Speech Technology Center) IT company. Any technical student, starting with third years', as well as young scientists and specialists could participate in the school; all one had to do is pass the entrance competition. ITMO Students Take Part In Experimental Interaction Design Summer School
From June 17 to June 28, the Experimental Interaction Design summer school took place at Tallinn University of Technology. This year, healthy lifestyle was the main theme of its courses. Anna Filippova and Anna Ksenofontova, Master's students at ITMO's Department of Engineering and Computer Graphics, took part in the school's programs and developed prototypes of devices meant for relieving the modern sedentary lifestyle. PhD Students Win Research Scholarships in Germany
In the beginning of October, three of ITMO's PhD students will go on an internship to Germany which will last until the end of March. The Mikhail Lomonosov program funded by DAAD and the Russian Ministry of Education and Science will offer the students an opportunity to conduct research in European universities and science centers. ITMO's PhD students spoke about the research they will be doing there.

ITMO Students in Singapore: How to Please Customers by Analyzing Their Social Media
In future, social networks could make advertisers’ work much easier. Big Data analysis algorithms can already figure out the ins and outs of a customer’s personality. They can be used to track negative reviews, determine the customers’ desires, identify their psychological type and tailor advertisements according to each customer’s data. A group of Master’s Degree students from the Computer Technologies Department have studied this topic at the National University of Singapore. They have told us about their research and the pros and cons of living in a city state.

Youth in Science: Summer Internship in Photonics and Optical IT
The Summer Internship has begun at ITMO University’s Department of Photonics and Optical Information Technologies. For two weeks, tenth-graders will acquaint themselves with the latest research in the fields of quantum information, biomedicine, femtosecond optics and other innovative sciences. The high-schoolers will work with scientists on actual research, start their own project and will soon be able to take part in prestigious conferences for experts in photonics and optical IT.
