Heritage Science at ITMO: Collaboration With Russian Museum and French Colleagues
The Heritage Science Lab was established at ITMO in 2020 after the corresponding megagrant application was approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science. Chosen to lead the new research unit was Olga Smolyanskaya, an associate professor at the Faculty of Photonics. Studying Russian art alongside her are ITMO scientists and students, as well as leading French specialists in cultural heritage studies: Michel Menu and Vincent Detalle. ITMO.NEWS spoke to the researchers and learned about their work’s results thus far, the lab’s current development, and its future plans.

ITMO.EduStars Winner Daria Martynova: Professionals Today Must Be Well-Rounded, Not Narrowly Specialized
Daria Martynova is an art historian. She earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s from St. Petersburg State University and spent a year in China studying the languages and art of East Asia. Daria currently teaches three courses at ITMO University: Modern and Contemprorary Art, History of Western European and Russian Culture, and Navigating St. Petersburg's Culture. Last year, she won an ITMO.EduStars award as one of the university’s top lecturers. We asked Daria why tech majors should learn art history and how medical humanities can assist healthcare specialists.

Future Tech and Mushrooms: Media Art at Optomycelium Exhibition
Until February 13, the AIR (Art.ITMO.Residency) gallery welcomes visitors of Optomycelium, an exhibition featuring works by accomplished media artists as well as students, graduates, and lecturers of ITMO University’s Art & Science Master’s program. The central themes of the exhibition are a university’s internal structure and the future of technology. Scientists from ITMO University also took part in the development of the displayed projects.

Art Project as Thesis: How to Graduate With a Work of Art

When Newton Dances: Head of Student Dance Club on Fusing Science and Dance
Since 2006, ITMO University has been home to Flame, a student dance studio that specializes in a variety of styles including hip-hop, house, locking, waacking, and others. Its members not only learn to dance, but also participate in dance battles and festivals – and even stage their own performances and musicals. ITMO.NEWS met with the studio’s head Elizaveta Nekrasova to learn why she left behind mathematics to pursue dance and how it can be used to explain the laws of physics.
