Improved Algorithm for Lung Cancer Diagnostics Suggested by ITMO Students
Students from ITMO University have developed a machine learning-based algorithm for detecting lung tumors on computed tomography (CT) scans. Trained on over 10,000 public-domain images, the model proved to generate results in 0.38 seconds. As noted by the developers, the technology may assist in online medical consultations to facilitate diagnostics.

Bringing Quantum Tech Closer: Researchers from ITMO and Ludwig Maximilian University Examine New Approach to 2D Heterostructures
In a paper published in Nature Nanotechnology, the collaborators from ITMO and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich describe a new method for producing two-dimensional heterostructures. The approach is based on the so-called moiré effect, achieved when two layers are stacked at a certain angle. The resulting patterns demonstrate exciton states that are of scientific interest and hold a potential in terms of next-gen electronic devices, as well as quantum technologies.

ITMO Researchers Present Automated Mobile Laboratory For Artificial Heart Development
A mini laboratory for managing cell and bacterial systems was created as a result of collaboration between scientists from ITMO University, Siberian Federal University, the Fund for Infrastructure and Educational Programs, and the research and manufacturing association Prolab. The project, recently presented at the Almazov National Medical Research Centre, will be used to grow cell cultures and create experiment-based databases; another avenue opened by the device is the development of an artificial heart. Learn more about the project and the possibilities it presents in this article.

A New Way to Measure Particles: ITMO Scientists Develop Electrodynamic Trap
Physicists from ITMO University have suggested an approach that allows them to simultaneously measure several characteristics of any microparticle – their size, mass, charge, and density. In order to test this method, they placed silica microparticles in an electrodynamic trap where they moved along a specific orbit that served as an indicator of their properties. The novel method demonstrates the precision of the more conventional approaches, which means that it can find its applications in materials science, chemistry, biology, and medicine.

Tools for Scientists: Use These to Bring Your Search for Papers to the Next Level
Unfortunately, it’s not enough to just complete your research if you want to publish it in a high-ranking journal. You need to find your collaborators and select the right journal – not to mention correctly compiling your application. This sounds like a lot of work, but luckily there are a lot of services that can help you on this quest. Ivan Sterligov, Russia’s leading expert on scientometrics and science communication and advisor to Vice Rector at HSE University, has shared his favorite tools at a recent webinar hosted by ITMO Library. Here is a summary of his talk.

Data-Based Medical Solutions: How Practicing Clinicians Can Benefit From Master’s in Public Health Sciences
In order to excel at their job, medical professionals need insights from population studies. These help to understand the spread of diseases, determine risk factors, and evaluate the effect of treatments on a wider scale. In order to operate with this data, clinicians can use statistical and sociological methods. The application of these tools for public health is the focus of ITMO’s dedicated Master’s program. We talked about the benefits of such training for medical professionals with endocrinologist Anastasia Kryuchkova, a student in the program.
