• Everything for Victory: Lives of ITMO Scientists – Heroes of WWII

  This year, Russia commemorates the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII in Europe – and its victory in the Great Patriotic War. Just like any Soviet family, ITMO also has its heroes from that terrifying time. In those days, hundreds of students, lecturers, and graduates went to war, while dozens of scientists remained in the city, enduring hunger and bombings to design and repair optical devices and systems – and even develop new technologies. In this article, we look back on three stories of such scientists, who contributed to the victory with their inventions.

  Russian science was moved forward not only by great singular minds, but sometimes by dynasties of talented researchers. One such example is the dynasty started by one of the founders of optical holography, Yuri Denisyuk, whose name is still remembered both in Russia and abroad. His son, Igor Denisyuk, chose to follow in his footsteps: he has spent over 20 years working at ITMO, creating high-concentration nanocomposites as well as anti-counterfeiting holograms based on this technology.
