• Creator of Near-Field Microscopes Satoshi Kawata Gives a Talk at ITMO University

  Photonics, optics, and metamaterials are among the key fields of focus for ITMO, and it is constantly advancing its collaborations with international experts who come to the university to share their expertise. One example is a recent visit by Satoshi Kawata, a Japanese scientist whose pioneering works changed these fields forever. Creator of near-field microscopes and honorary scientist of RIKEN, Japan’s largest and most comprehensive research organization for basic and applied science, Prof. Kawata visited ITMO University's Centre for Information Optical Technologies with a presentation on his research.

• Biochemistry Twins on Creating their Own Lab

  The Vinogradov twins are leading a large structural division at ITMO University called the Biochemistry cluster. Once upon a time, they were just two ordinary brothers, who secretly studied chemistry, with a dream of creating their own laboratory. They arrive at the interview together, but Vladimir is forced to leave for business, so we talk only with Alexander. This is not unusual for them – one for two and two for one.

• Scientists' New Image And Academic Mobility: Professor Pavel Belov's Take on Modern Science

  Last week, a session of The Social project that brings together people from different professions who aim to learn new things took place in one of St. Petersburg's bars.  The project was launched in Switzerland three years ago and now involves about 40,000 people in 12 countries. Its goal is de-virtualization of human communication via the concept of inclusiveness. The organizers invite people from different fields to participate in their meetups, so that the topics would not be limited to just professional interests only and the networking process would take place in a community that is interested in new ideas and trends of the future. At the recent session, Pavel Belov, Dean of Faculty of Physics and Engineering and Head of ITMO’s International Research Center for Nanophotonics and Metamaterials, gave an informal lecture in which  he shared his opinions about modern science as seen from Russia.

• Faculty of Physics and Engineering Staff to Republish Legendary Soviet Physicist’s Works

  ‘The Unusual Laws of Refraction and Reflection’ is a science-pop book by Soviet physics luminary Robert Silin. In this oeuvre that used to be well-known to every Russian physics buff, Prof. Silin describes the laws that, despite only being discovered at the turn of the last century, have already entered the scientific day-to-day. The book was first sent to press more than 20 years ago in 1999 and is now being republished in a new-and-improved edition with updated terminology and expanded contents. ITMO University’s Faculty of Physics and Engineering staff were instrumental in bringing the book to the 21th century audience. They let ITMO.NEWS in on how the ‘renovation’ project took place and explained the importance of reminding the international scientific community about Russian physicists.

• 4th International Conference on the Periodic Table: Mendeleev 150

  The UN has recently declared 2019 the Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements. In this regard, scientific conferences, symposiums, competitions and congresses will be held all around the world. ITMO University will host one of the key events, the 4th International Conference on the Periodic Table. Leading specialists in the field of chemistry from Russia, the USA, Italy and other countries will come to St. Petersburg to take part in the Conference.

• Irina Hussainova: Estonian “Scientist of the Year”

  How to make a device that can be used to diagnose dangerous diseases? What helped to design a substrate that allows scientists to grow neurons in artificial conditions? And why is it not enough for a scientist to be an expert in only one specific narrow field? We have got an opportunity to discuss these and other questions with Irina Hussainova, an invited researcher at the International Research Center of Functional Materials and Devices of Optoelectronics and Electronics at ITMO University. This year, she was awarded the title of “Scientist of the Year” in Estonia and she has recently come to St. Petersburg to continue joint research. We asked her about the latest trends in the field of  biohealthcare  and additive technologies, the prospects of cooperating with ITMO and how an opportunity can turn a whole life of a scientist around.

  In the eyes of a layperson, the career of a scientist might seem an extraordinary, lifelong adventure. People foreign to the world of science have little understanding of the factors that influence a scientist’s path in their field. This week, young scientists from ITMO University and The Ioffe Institute gathered in a bar to discuss how the career of a scientist differs from that of other specialists, what is special about working in the Academy of Sciences, whether it is worth it to move to another country, and what is wrong with the current policies of encouraging women into science. • Stephen Hawking: Life in Books

  Stephen Hawking, one of the greatest physicists of our time, died on Wednesday, 14 March, at the age of 76. Stephen Hawking is best known for his outstanding book A Brief History of Time and his enormous zest for life (he floated in zero-gravity and even wanted to go to space, suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). He helped popularise science and became “the No. 1 celebrity scientist”. In April 1988, his book, A Brief History of Time, was published and became a best-seller. Then the books Black Holes and Young Universes (1993) and The World in a Nutshell (2001) were published. In 2005 A Brief History of Time was reprinted. But this is not the whole list of Stephen Hawking’s books. So, we decided to review all his books and describe the role of these books in his life.
