8 Skills to Help AI Engineers Keep Their Jobs
In recent years, popular voice assistants like Alice, Siri, and Alexa have evolved from programs capable of fulfilling simple tasks into full-scale AI assistants. With them has evolved the stack of technologies that engineers need to have a grasp on – from voice generation and speech processing to LLMs and generative search. What skills do AI engineers need to build now to keep their jobs tomorrow? That was the topic of a recent lecture given at ITMO’s Yandex space by Valery Stromov, the CEO of Alice and Smart Devices at Yandex. Mr. Stromov heads a team of over 700, with whom he is developing a service now used by about 47 million people. Read on for the highlights of the talk.

ITMO’s New AI Assistant for Physicists Makes Theoretical Calculations and Material Selection Simple
Developed at ITMO, AI-Materials Project is an AI assistant that significantly facilitates and speeds up calculations of material properties based on fundamental laws of physics. Complex computations no longer require deep theoretical expertise or specialized software, and the process now takes just minutes instead of a full day. With this new AI-powered tool, scientists will be able to determine a material's physical properties faster and more accurately in order to select the best option for research in laser technologies, optics, as well as thermal and microelectronics.

ITMO Researchers Present Smart Assistant for Nanostructured Materials Design
Experts at ITMO have created an AI-based platform that automates the search and processing of scientific literature on nanomaterials design. This smart assistant takes minutes to process a user’s request, analyze the related data, and generate responses with 81% accuracy. The system also has an additional agent that evaluates response quality and, if needed, edits the prompt, which brings the risk of hallucinations down a further 15%. With the platform, research teams will be able to proceed from hypothesis to experiment faster. The new assistant and related research were described in a paper published in Journal of Chemical Information and Modeling.
