  • ITMO Researchers Discover New Acoustic Force for More Accurate Shape-Based Sorting of Cells

Scientists at ITMO University have found a new lateral recoil force that affects non-spherical particles in an acoustic field. The new force will make it easier to extract cells of a certain shape from blood or other liquids – such as elongated platelets or spherical leukocytes – which will be useful for developing new, more accurate, and affordable methods for diagnosing various diseases. The findings were reported in Physical Review Applied and highlighted in Physics Magazine.

  • Bringing New Technologies Closer: ITMO PI Mikhail Petrov Talks Quantum Nanophotonics, Optical Levitation, and Research Management

Coming from a family of physicists, Mikhail Petrov didn’t have to think long to choose his career path. His career started at one of the best schools in the city, then led him to Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, to Finland, and finally – to ITMO, where he works on his own research, leading a team of young scientists. Among the several projects developed by his team is quantum memory, as well as optical levitation and optical tweezers. In this article, he shares how fundamental research fosters next-gen technologies and offers tips on managing a team of theoretical physicists.

  • ITMO Physicists Prove Feasibility of Non-Radiating States in Compact Acoustic Resonators: New Discovery Will Benefit Development of Acoustic Antennas and Sensors

Researchers from ITMO University’s Faculty of Physics have succeeded in disproving a non-existence theorem which states that oscillations in open resonance systems must fade out by radiating energy into the surrounding medium. The physicists were able to calculate the shapes of acoustic resonators for which this theorem would not apply. In the resulting system, the energy of oscillations does not radiate into the surrounding space and remains within the resonator. Results of this research will facilitate the development of acoustic antennas and sensors.

  • Collecting Sounds: ITMO Holds Workshop on Soundscapes and Environmental Acoustics

As part of the Access Modes exhibition at ITMO’s new Art.ITMO.Residence space, the university held a workshop titled “The concept of a soundscape”. Those taking part were able to learn about noise pollution and tried to study the environment of sound surrounding them.
