  • For the Benefit of the Environment: ITMO Specialists Develop Biodegradable Food Packaging and Nutritious Plant-Based Food

    Specialists from ITMO University’s School of Biotechnology and Cryogenic Systems work on a wide range of projects that are highly promising for the refrigeration, food, and waste processing industries. For instance, at the moment the scientists at the Faculty of Food Biotechnologies and Engineering are developing biodegradable coatings and packaging for food products and working on the creation of food products for different consumer categories, including vegetarians and vegans. The latter two projects are headed by Natalia Yakovchenko, senior lecturer at ITMO University. ITMO.NEWS spoke to Prof. Yakovchenko to find out more about the research, its relevance, and the environmental component.

  • Sustainable Development Expert on Green Thinking and Eco-Friendly Construction

    Guy Eames is chair of the Russian Green Building Council (RUGBC) and has a master’s in climate change and sustainable development. For the last 10 years, he has been actively promoting the concept of green building in Russia. As part of the online open day of ITMO’s Laboratory of Sustainable Urban Development, Guy Eames spoke about the tools of environmentally friendly construction which are already being applied in Russia and abroad, and shared his opinion on the future of this trend.

  • Students of Three European Universities Visit Russia to Study Closed-Loop Economy on the Example of St. Petersburg Companies

    CREA-RE-RU is a joint project by ITMO University, University of Gävle (Sweden), Lahti University of Applied Sciences (Finland), and University of Latvia. For two years now, the project’s participants have been solving real-life business cases provided by production plants and companies by developing effective schemes for utilizing natural resources. The project is divided into four study sessions: each semester, the participants are welcomed by a different partner university. ITMO University became the final venue, hosting the international students on February 17-21.

  • Environmental Scientist Jaana Sorvari on Sustainable Waste Management in Europe and Russia

    Jaana Sorvari, a professor at Aalto University (Finland) and researcher at the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE), has come to ITMO University to deliver the intensive course “Environmental Risk Assessment in Waste Management.” During the course, Master’s students from the program Industrial Ecology and Cleaner Production learned about Europe and Finland’s experience of sustainable waste management. ITMO.NEWS spoke with Prof. Sorvari about the challenges currently faced by Europe in terms of waste management and learned why excessive consumption is an issue not only in Russia, but even in eco-friendly Scandinavian states.
