  • ITMO.EduStars Winner Dmitry Sinev on Mythological Aspect of Teaching and Memes in Classroom

    Although Dmitry Sinev studies laser thermochemistry and develops various methods for recording functional elements, he sees himself primarily as a lecturer. Back when he was doing his Master’s degree, he began educating school students about lasers, optical technologies, and their applications. Then, as a PhD student, he taught classes at the university. Dmitry believes that learning is not a race for the best scores but a search for meanings and also sees memes as a great way to help students understand complex topics. In this article, the lecturer speaks about what teachers and wizards have in common and how teachers can motivate students to think outside the box.

  • ITMO.EduStars Winner and ICPC Star Coach Andrey Stankevich on Finding His Calling

    Andrey Stankevich got into programming when he was still in school; in the 90s, before he even had his own computer, he already read computer science books and took computer classes. As a student at ITMO, he twice became the winner of ICPC, the world’s most prestigious programming competition. After graduating and becoming a lecturer, he took up coaching. Under his leadership, ITMO University’s team became the world’s only seven-time ICPC champion. We spoke to Andrey to find out about the differences between academic teaching and coaching, getting students to engage with complex topics, and why teaching is more than a vocation.

    Daria Martynova is an art historian. She earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s from St. Petersburg State University and spent a year in China studying the languages and art of East Asia. Daria currently teaches three courses at ITMO University: Modern and Contemprorary Art, History of Western European and Russian Culture, and Navigating St. Petersburg's Culture. Last year, she won an ITMO.EduStars award as one of the university’s top lecturers.
