• U.S. Fulbright Scholar Victoria Alexander on St. Petersburg, Isolation and Nabokov’s Connection to Evolution

  Professor Victoria Alexander, a specialist in the field of evolutionary mechanisms, came to St. Petersburg in February as part of the Fulbright Program. She had begun her academic career in literary studies and researched the works of Vladimir Nabokov. However, the writer’s interest in butterflies made Victoria interested in biology and evolutionary mechanisms. At ITMO University, she will spend the semester teaching students of the Digital Humanities Master’s program research methods of humanities and natural sciences. ITMO.NEWS asked her why she decided to come to St. Petersburg, how Nabokov is related to the theory of evolution, and how she spends her time in self-isolation.

• Crossing Single-Celled Organisms With AI: ITMO’s Art & Science Students On Interdisciplinary Art Experiments

  The BIOROBOTY 019 team consists of four students of ITMO’s Master’s program in Art & Science: Alyona Korolyova, Marta Mikhailova, Viktoria Romanova and Svetlana Sidorova. In their work, they combine bioart, robotics, neural networks and artificial intelligence in various unexpected scenarios. Their project Physarum the Fortuneteller, first exhibited at The International Media Art Festival CYFEST-12, was chosen to become part of a major collaborative exhibition to take place in France. ITMO.NEWS talked to Viktoria Romanova, a member of the team, and asked her where the idea to combine bioart with robotics came from and where it has led the artists.

• Artist and Biologist Ippolit Markelov on Russian Science Art and Collaborating With Scientists

  Ippolit Markelov has visited ITMO with a series of science art workshops for ITMO’s Art & Science Master’s program. Over the course of two weeks, the students learned the many ways they could use micro-, molecular and neurobiology as well as genetic engineering in their art projects.
