ITMO Staff Visit Harbin Institute of Technology with Lecture Series
Lyudmila Nadtochiy, Vera Ivanova and Oksana Golovinskaya, lecturers from ITMO University’s Faculty of Food Biotechnologies and Engineering, participated in a project dedicated to the development of academic cooperation in the field of food biotechnology between Russia and China. Over the course of a month, they visited several Chinese cities and presented lectures to PhD students of the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT). Spanish Environmental Biotechnologists on the Environmental Situation, Greta Thunberg and Two-Phase Air Filters

Before the start of a new academic year, head of ITMO University’s Research Laboratory for Computer-Aided Design of Optical-Information and Energy Saving Systems Irina Livshitz gave ten classes as part of the summer school at the University of Eastern Finland, an ITMO University partner. She spoke about the development of augmented and virtual reality systems. ITMO.NEWS met Prof. Livshitz to learn about where to start with optical systems design, whether Russian students are any different from their international counterparts, and will it be possible to make VR headsets comfortable for wearing.

ITMO University Partners with Art&Science Day Skolkovo
Right now, the Skolkovo Innovation Center in Moscow is hosting Startup Village Skolkovo-2019. ITMO University’s Art&Science Center has become a partner of this year’s event, which unites science, technologies and art on one unique platform. Leading scientists, representatives of the creative industry and authors of projects at the intersection of science and art will meet at the Skolkovo venue to discuss the central topic “Art&Science – the territory of foresight”. Key speakers include ITMO University professor Ekaterina Skorb, head of ITMO University’s Art&Science program and head of the Contemporary Art Department at the State Hermitage Museum Dmitry Ozerkov, and organizers of Russia’s largest street art festival Stenograffia.

ITMO Fellow Ilya Anoshkin on Nanotubes and Working Abroad
Terahertz technologies hail a new era where blood tests are much more accurate, and Internet faster. All this is thanks to nanomaterials and their unique properties. One of the leading researchers in this field, Ilya Anoshkin joined ITMO University’s teaching staff via the ITMO Fellowship program. Dining with Laureates: ITMO PhD Student Shares His Experience of the Sixth Heidelberg Forum
Every year, young scientists from all over the world come to the German city of Heidelberg to take part in the Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF), a networking event for young mathematicians and computer scientists willing to meet with the world’s leading researchers in these fields. To be allowed to participate, young scientists have to undergo a rigorous selection process, but if you succeed, you are given an opportunity to not only listen to laureates’ speeches but also talk to them in person in an informal setting. Besides, participants can showcase their own ideas and get an expert opinion. Javlon Isomurodov, a PhD student from ITMO’s Information Technologies and Programming Faculty, also partake in the forum. In this interview with ITMO.NEWS, he talks about how the selection process is organized and what opportunities the forum brings to young scientists.

Transcending Humanity: Evolution of Technological Art
Last week, the first FUTURE ART festival was held in St. Petersburg. The event explored the cutting-edge sphere of BioArt, an Art&Science current encompassing the synthesis of artistic, scientific, creative, and technological methods of contemporary art-making. BioArt adherents work with live materials and organic processes. In her FUTURE ART lecture, art expert and head of ITMO’s Art & Science Center Anastasiia Yarmosh talked about how the technological art changed over the years, in which direction it is now heading, and what questions it deals with today.
