Twice a year, ITMO University students have an opportunity to go abroad for an exchange semester. They can choose from over 200 of ITMO’s partner universities in 30 countries around the world. We sat down with four Cuban students who are currently studying at ITMO University to learn about their life in Russia. For several years now, students from all over the world have been coming to St. Petersburg to take part in ITMO University's Camp in Programming. We met three current students: Hassan from The Gambia, Roh from Slovenia, and Enrique from Mexico, to talk about their experience.
For the third year in a row, ITMO University's Russian Language Summer School has given students from around the world an opportunity to delve into intense Russian language study for a few weeks, get to know the beautiful city of St. Petersburg, and learn more about Russian culture.
How does lighting design help reflect natural occurrences in the urban environment and make the latter more accommodating for people? Beata Kublik and Paulina Dudkiewicz, Master’s students from Aalborg University (Denmark), are currently doing an internship at ITMO University’s Higher School of Lighting Design. The two students are developing a new lighting design model for one of St. Petersburg’s public parks using a nature-oriented approach. They believe that the value of light as an architectural tool will only increase wherever people haven’t yet realized its importance.
Last week ITMO University and the University of Applied Sciences of Western Switzerland conducted a short-term exchange involving 30 students from Switzerland and Russia. The students discussed and collaborated on various practices related to social entrepreneurship. ITMO’s Social Design and Entrepreneurship Center organized the exchange as part of a program for international youth exchange in social services. Making a cramped square feel comfortable, improving lives of medical patients and helping school students study better: students from Aalborg University (Denmark) use light to solve these and other tasks. This Scandinavian country is home to more than the concept of hygge – it is also one of the major European centers for modern art; here, lighting design projects aren’t limited to just museums and art spaces, but are actually becoming a part of the urban environment. Valeria Lukinskaya and Dmitry Chukhin, Master’s students at ITMO’s Higher School of Lighting Design, learned about the best practices and approaches in lighting design during an internship at Aalborg University.
A student of the University of Oulu (Finland), Niki Tenhunen is spending this spring semester at ITMO University as an exchange student. Niki is a second-year Bachelor’s student with a major in international business. When he’s not studying, he strolls about the city for hours on end, fights stereotypes about life in Russia and even helps make movies. For our interview, we asked Niki about his life in St. Petersburg, its surprises and attractions.
Maria Garets, a student at the Department of Intelligent Technologies in Humanities at ITMO University, spent her winter semester at Eurecom, a graduate school and research centre in communication systems established by one of the top French universities, Telecom ParisTech. Eurecom is located at the heart of Sophia Antipolis, Europe’s largest technopark, a hotbed for internships and job opportunities. ITMO.NEWS asked Maria about her experience of studying in France.
Students from around the world have come to participate in the IT and Innovation Business in Russia exchange semester at ITMO. Among them is a bright and bubbly group from Brazil. Every year a group of four or five students come from the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES) in Vittoria, on the east coast of Brazil, to join our exchange semester. Last year we talked to Esthevão who shared about what brought him to Russia. This year we talk with Angelo, Thales, Caio, Mateus and Yan who have been here for five weeks now, about their experience so far.
