The seasonal school was organized by ITMO’s Higher School of Engineering and Technology (HSET). Out of 550 applicants, 217 got into the final stage and 111 were named among the winners. The school welcomed students and graduates from 81 cities in Russia and neighboring countries: Almetyevsk, Volgograd, Kazan, Moscow, Novosibirsk, Tomsk, Tashkent, Minsk, and many others. Participation was open to school and university students, especially final-year students of Bachelor’s programs and graduates of engineering majors.

The participants got to attend online lectures by PhD and DSc holders from among ITMO’s top teaching staff. During webinars and workshops, they learned how optical fiber is used to transmit data in modern optical communication systems, what trends exist in today’s programmable integrated circuits and how they’re used in instrumentation, which properties of optical devices allow us to observe and secure small objects, why ultralow temperatures are crucial to transportation of natural gas, and what role IP specialists play in the development and implementation of innovative projects.

Each webinar included practical assignments on topics studied at HSET: for instance, students used the Matlab environment to develop a circuit that can restore data out of modulated signals; visualized the process of searching and eliminating errors in systems that transmit and receive data as part of programmable logic devices; evaluated the quality of their own smartphones’ camera lenses and tried their hand at macrophotography; and learned how to structure public presentations as engineers.

Upon conclusion of the intensive course, attendees were invited to write an essay on the topic “My Winter Engineering School 2025.” After evaluating the submissions, the jury picked 111 winners, who received a diploma that allows them to enroll exam-free in any of the Master’s programs offered by HSET:

“The participants not only worked on tasks, but also got to know ITMO, its specialists, and the projects the university is implementing. At the university, we try to create an environment in which every student isn’t just a ‘listener,’ but a participant in the educational process – and that’s done through various applied projects. Right now, HSET has more than 20 industrial partners and our joint projects involve researchers as well as students,” says Andrei Kulikov, the head of HSET.
