The results of the 2019 national student competition “I am a Professional” have just been announced. From a total of 500,000 students from all over Russia participating in this year’s competition, 3,472 became prize winners. This roll call of participants with the best results includes 80 ITMO University students, five of whom were even awarded gold medals. Diplomates of “I am a Professional” get admission perks when applying to Master’s and PhD programs at Russia’s leading universities, as well as an opportunity to partake in an internship at major companies.
Late February marked the end of “It’s Your Call!” winter school, organized by ITMO University in collaboration with Sberbank. Alexey Voloshchuk, the head of the St. Petersburg branch of the bank’s Cyber-Security Center, and Vladislav Verus, one of center’s staff members, contributed to the school’s program with an open lecture during which they shared some insights into the center’s approach to maintaining the integrity of the bank’s network perimeter.
February 20 marked the final, on-site round of “I am a Professional”, a national competition for university students. ITMO University was one of the venues to host the three-hour contest. Participants of the “It’s Your Call!” winter school, which was held as part of the competition, and the final round of the competition itself, talked with ITMO.NEWS about their competition experience. “It’s Your Call!”, a winter school organized by ITMO University together with Sberbank, has just come to a close. Attending this year were 180 contestants of the five educational tracks (Programming and IT, Data- and Cybersecurity, Big Data, Robotics, and Photonics) of the national student competition “I am a Professional”. Over the course of five days, the students took part in project work to find a solution to topical social and infrastructural issues with the help of modern technologies. All project work topics went under the common banner of “campus life”. ITMO.NEWS reports on the projects that made it onto the winners’ podium.

The Winter School “It’s Your Call!”, organized by ITMO University and Sberbank, has recently begun its second season. The school brought together the participants of the national student competition “I am a Professional” in five educational tracks (“Programming and IT”, “Data- and Cybersecurity”, “Big Data”, “Robotics”, and “Photonics”). 180 Bachelor and Master’s students came to ITMO University to compete and shared their expectations for the Winter School.
Breathing-Checker Belt and Smart Trousers: ITMO Students Explore Health Devices at Tallinn University Winter School
A winter school in Experimental Interaction Design has recently taken place at Tallinn University. Held on January 14-25, it focused on using technologies for facilitating a healthy lifestyle. Among the school’s participants were Master’s students of ITMO’s Faculty of Software Engineering and Computer Systems Zarina Gabdullazyanova, Svetlana Galoshina, Kristina Barysheva and PhD student Yulia Bezbakh. In the course of their studies, they developed operating prototypes of devices that would help people breathe, clean their teeth and do sit-ups in the right way. They spoke to ITMO.NEWS about their projects and overall experience.
The registration for this year’s national competition for students ‘I am a Professional’ kicked off on September 26 and ended on November 22. A total of 523,612 students submitted their applications, which is 78% more than the last year’s number of 295,000 participants. ‘I am a Professional’ offers its winners a golden opportunity of preferential access to Master’s and PhD programs of leading Russian universities, as well as an internship in a major company and a money prize. Having taken off on November 24, the competition’s qualification round will last all the way to December 9.
The “It’s Your Call!” Winter School that brought together the best participants of the “I am a Professional” academic competition has just ended at ITMO University. Recently, Bachelor’s and Master’s students from 33 Russian cities that showed high results in the competition’s three tracks (Computer Science, Information and cybersecurity, and Photonics). Andrey Sebrant, Product Marketing Director at Yandex and author for the @techsparks popular science channel, gave an open lecture on machine learning, the development of technology and the professions of the future. In an interview for ITMO.NEWS, he shared about the prospects of using machine learning and the issues related to public confidence, as well as the skills sought-after by leading IT companies and the fundamental problems of modern education.
Can you bring physicists, programmers, and information security professionals to work as a single team and get them to come up with full-fledged projects in just a single week? The recent semi-hackathon which focused on addressing comprehensive problems, proposing viable products and coming up with valid merchandising strategies proved this possible. The hackathon involved more than a hundred students who came to ITMO University for the “It’s Your Call!” winter school which was organized in collaboration with Sberbank of Russia. Of the 18 participating teams, six made it into the finals, and the participants of the three winning teams won the right to enter Master’s and PhD programs at ITMO University without taking exams.
