ROSPHOTO's hand-picked selection of over 120 photographs urges viewers to move their focus away from what happens to how they perceive images. On display are works by celebrated masters of the 19th-21st centuries that illustrate that photography, at its essence, is an accident, singularity, and adventure, as pointed out by the French essayist Roland Bartes.

Despite his origins in the Saratov Governorate, Alexei Karev built himself a name in the 19th-20th centuries as a well-known St. Petersburg artist who adored Vasilyevsky Island and beautifully portrayed the city in its stillness. His landscapes are well-loved – and are now on display at the State Russian Museum, including the artist’s swan song titled The Neva.

In celebration of the 150th anniversary of Nicholas Roerich’s birth, the exhibition showcases a collection of the artist’s works spanning from his early years to old age. Apart from his artistic milestones, there are also the Roerichs’ archaeological (over 26,000 items) and art collections, as well as rare examples of Russian icon painting and Tibetan painting, objects of decorative and applied arts, photographs, and books – all associated with the life and art of Nicholas Roerich.
