This week, we have two causes for a celebration. The first is Tatiana’s Day - a merry student holiday; to learn more about this occasion and the relevant events dedicated to it, please refer to our recent article on the topic.
The other one is most important to our city - the Day of Lifting the Siege of Leningrad. This year, the pinnacle of the celebration will be a reenactment of the historic salute of 1944. For two days, the Field of Mars will take on its 1940s’ look, and host different historic exhibitions and workshops; on Saturday, January 27, at around 8 pm, the sky will be lit up with signal flares, and an artillery battery that once defended the city will salute its victory with a series of volleys - definitely a sight to see.
Yet another event that has to do with Russian history is a most curious exhibition dedicated to Vladimir Lenin. “The Most Humane of All Us Humans” (a famous quote by the poet Mayakovsky) features various artworks by modern artists and focuses not on some political or historical take on the famous revolutionary, but the very myth surrounding this man, in an attempt to explain and study study its effect on the perceptions of those born in the Soviet Era. The exhibition takes place at the Rumyantsev Mansion and will be open till February 18.
As for the more regular events that may interest you, there is the Wes Anderson Weekend at the Rodina Cinema Center, screening two works by the award-winning director - “Moonrise Kingdom” on January 26 and “The Fantastic Mr. Fox” on January 27. Both films will be screened in English, so if you're not a fan of dubbed movies, now’s your chance!
Another great screening will take place at the Leningrad Center, where they’ll be broadcasting the famous musical "Follies" as staged by National Theatre London - naturally, also in English.
See you next week! Yours, ITMO.NEWS.
