1. Summer CERN program in Switzerland

Undergraduate and graduate students can already apply for the summer student program at CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research, one of the world's largest and most respected scientific research centers.
For over two months, participants of the student program can become part of a diverse team of researchers, attend lectures, visit CERN facilities, take part in discussions and workshops with people who are leaders in their fields.
Undergraduate students who have completed at least three years of studies, Master’s students, and those graduating in the summer of 2018, in the fields of physics, computer science or engineering, are eligible to participate.
A mandatory requirement for all participants is fluent(or adequate) knowledge of English. Knowledge of French would also improve your chances.
Funding includes a scholarship of 90 CHF a day, as well as reimbursement of travel expenses. Participants of the program are assisted in finding housing near the lab, and medical insurance.
Participants applying for the 2018 scholarship need to provide the selection committee with references from two academic supervisors. You also need to submit your CV (in English or French) and your academic transcript. Those accepted will be notified by the end of April 2018.

2. DESY Summer Student Programme — Germany’s largest research center for particle physics

Where: Hamburg, Berlin (Germany)

Another opportunity for physicists: every summer, DESY, the biggest particle physics research center in Germany, offers undergraduate students who study at a department of physics or who study natural sciences, an opportunity to do research in their own lab.
Candidates who have completed three years of study in their Bachelor’s program (by summer 2018) in a physics-related department can participate. However, priority will be given to those who will have already completed their bachelor’s by summer 2018, or first year Master’s students.
Participants of the internship have to be participating in the course for the first time and have strong English language skills.
The organizers will pay for room and board, as well as part of the transport expenses. Those chosen to participate will join the research lab group at DESY, in Hamburg or Berlin and can participate in one of their programs. More information about the conditions for participation are on the site.
3. Aalto University Summer School (Finland)

When: Three months over summer 2018
Where: Espoo, Finland
Scholarship: Tuition fees are covered
All summer, from 1 June to 31 August, you can participate in a paid internship not far from St. Petersburg, at Aalto University, one of ITMO University’s partners. Among the available schools you could join are School of Science, School of Electrical Engineering, School of Engineering or School of Chemical Engineering. Students in their second year of Bachelor’s studies or higher can apply. During the internship, students will be paid at least 1,450 euros a month.
Documents required for the application are: passport, CV (including academic and professional achievements); motivational letter; academic transcript, references from your university; a certificate showing your english language level (TOEFL, IELTS) or an English language certificate from ITMO University (to receive this certificate and take the test please contact Yana Shukova yashukova@corp.ifmo.ru);

4. Workshop for science journalists at Rhode-Island University (United States)

The University of Rhode Island’s Metcalf Institute for Marine & Environmental Reporting is accepting applications for its 20th Annual Science Immersion Workshop for Journalists
As noted by the organizers, throughout the five-day crash course, participants will be able to:
- Gain a deeper understanding of how scientists conduct research and handle scientific uncertainty;
- Develop the skills and confidence to translate the language of scientific journals for news audiences;
- Board a research vessel to study the impact of rising water temperatures on ecosystems and fish populations;
- Discover new ways to write about climate change to build audience understanding and engagement;
- Network and develop lasting relationships with journalists from around the globe.
Ten journalists will be awarded fellowships, which include tuition, room and board, and travel support ($1000 US will be given after the program). Priority is given to American journalists, however there are a few spots reserved for overseas specialists. Journalists applying from outside the U.S. must provide written assurance that they have full travel funds and can obtain the appropriate visa.

5. International Summer University at Kassel University, Germany

Kassel University is a state university of Hessen in Germany that specializes in engineering and ecological sciences, social research, as well as art and teaching. Every year, students from 115 different countries participate in the summer school. All students over 18 years of age can participate in the school.
The university’s summer school offers short-term study programs for international students, researchers and professors.
The summer school includes several modules, including one in engineering. Tuition fees are 2190€. However, the university offers a scholarship which will cover the tuition fees, living expenses and meals twice a day. You would need to pay for transport and personal expenses. Every participant can choose one module and participate in two seminars, and also participate in language courses.
In order to participate, you need to provide the following documents: motivation letter; reference letter from your lecturer (your referee must have a PhD); application form, CV, your academic transcript (with an English language translation), results of English language tests (TOEFL, IELTS or other). All documents should be scanned and sent in pdf format to isu@uni-kassel.de
