ITMO.EduStars Winner Dmitry Sinev on Mythological Aspect of Teaching and Memes in Classroom
Although Dmitry Sinev studies laser thermochemistry and develops various methods for recording functional elements, he sees himself primarily as a lecturer. Back when he was doing his Master’s degree, he began educating school students about lasers, optical technologies, and their applications. Then, as a PhD student, he taught classes at the university. Dmitry believes that learning is not a race for the best scores but a search for meanings and also sees memes as a great way to help students understand complex topics. In this article, the lecturer speaks about what teachers and wizards have in common and how teachers can motivate students to think outside the box.

ITMO Open Education Conference: Alternative Formats, Fundamental Skills, and Rap Battles
On May 20, ITMO once again challenged stereotypes about education one more time, when it welcomed edtech experts, entrepreneurs, and lecturers at the Open Education conference to discuss the future of universities. Participants of this full-blown educational rave could visit workshops and lectures, cheer on rap battles, and even record a podcast. Here are the highlights of the event.

ITMO.Mentors: How Students Benefit from Teaching Practice
ITMO.EduStars offers the university’s lecturers and researchers to showcase their work and receive recognition for their achievements. The competition welcomes not only experienced teachers, but also ordinary students who participate in the ITMO.Mentors program. As part of the program, Master’s and PhD students take a teaching course following which they can assist lecturers with organizing and holding their classes. Three students were named as the top mentors while two others received special recognition from the expert jury.

ITMO.EduStars Winner Alexander Kapitonov on How to Motivate Students and Make Engineering Interesting
Alexander Kapitonov started teaching robotics as a PhD student thanks to his experience working at the Presidential Physics and Mathematics Lyceum No. 239. Now, he not only teaches and leads projects, but also heads ITMO’s Faculty of Infocommunication Technologies. Last year, Alexander was one of the winners of the ITMO.EduStars contest. ITMO.EduStars Winner Andrey Balkanskii on Keeping up With the Trends as a Lecturer

ITMO Edu.Stars Winner Anton Starovoytov on Teaching Lab Classes Online
Anton Starovoytov started teaching as a PhD student. Now he is the vice dean of ITMO’s Faculty of Photonics and a researcher at the university’s International Research and Educational Center for Physics of Nanostructures. He also develops educational projects, such as virtual simulations of physical equipment for lab projects on nonlinear optics, which will make such equipment more accessible. Last year, Anton Starovoytov was named one of the winners of the ITMO.EduStars contest. ITMO.EduStars Winner Svetlana Kurashova: “To Me, Teaching is a Source of Joy”
Svetlana Kurashova, a physics lecturer at ITMO University, became interested in this field as a child and worked towards becoming a professional since school. After graduating from Leningrad State University (now St. Petersburg State University), she joined ITMO and has been teaching physics here for 28 years. Last year, she received an ITMO.EduStars award as one of the university’s best lecturers. EduStars Winner Andrey Vasilyev on Teaching History to Programmers
Another ITMO Edu Awards will take place this year at ITMO. EduStars Winner Marina Barantseva: Teaching the Way I’d Want to Be Taught
Marina Barantseva started out as a professional linguist and translator and worked in marketing for ten years before deciding to completely reinvent her life. She followed her childhood dream to become a teacher; for the past three years, she has been teaching English to university students. Last year, she won the ITMO EduStars contest of best academic practices.
