ITMO and Friends of St. Petersburg Project Restore Lost Paintings with AI
Recently, ITMO curated a project on AI-assisted restoration of historic panels at the Catherine Palace in Tsarskoe Selo. The restoration workshop was organized by the Friends of St. Petersburg project with technological support from Yandex Cloud. 37 local students, including 14 young professionals from ITMO, took part in the workshop: using neural networks, they created images that will be used during restoration works at the palace.

IT Graduates at ITMO Among Highest Paid in Russia
In the latest Superjob ranking, ITMO University was ranked first in St. Petersburg and second in Russia based on the net income of its IT graduates. In 2025, ITMO-trained IT specialists earn an average of 290,000 rubles a month – their salary grew by 12% compared to last year.

ITMO Scientists Study Gradient Structures in Cobalt Solution Sediments
ITMO scientists have explained how gradient structures of cobalt compounds form when Liesegang rings emerge in agar gel. The researchers registered six stages of precipitation with various properties. In the future, this approach can make it possible to quickly and cheaply create new materials with target properties. Those can be used as substrates for cells in electrochemical devices, thermal sensors, and antimicrobial coating. The study was first presented at the exhibition of research projects at ITMO’s 14th Congress of Young Scientists.

Lasers for Medicine: ITMO Alumna’s Startup Aims to Improve Cancer Treatment
After studying laser technology at ITMO, Iulia Ruzankina applied her skills in the fields of metal processing and mineral resources. Everything changed when she lost her father to cancer – from then on, she decided to devote herself to improving cancer treatments. Today, her team is working on a photonic endoscope that could provide a minimally invasive way to destroy tumors without harming healthy tissue. With the prototype ready, the startup team is planning to conduct animal and then clinical trials. ITMO.NEWS spoke to Yulia about her path as a researcher and the role of lasers in medicine.
