ITMO University and VR/AR Association Host Japan VR/AR Day in St. Petersburg
With more than 16,000 members around the world, the VR/AR Association is the world’s largest community of developers and entrepreneurs in the field of VR and AR. Last week, ITMO University hosted this year’s third VR/AR Association meetup, dubbed the Japan AR/VR Day. Among the event’s speakers were representatives of major Japanese companies in the field of innovative technologies. They spoke about the varied applications of virtual, augmented and mixed reality technologies, as well as their potential when combined with technologies such as artificial intelligence. The meeting was organized in collaboration with ITMO University’s Educational Center of Graphic Technologies and Center of Usability and Mixed Reality.

MTS Lead Architect Mikhail Mishurovsky on Collaboration with ITMO
About a year ago, the MTS company started focusing on the development of AI-based products. A research group was formed as part of this new direction. The group’s specialists create virtual assistants, incorporate AI technologies in medicine and office management, as well as carry out two joint projects with ITMO University. Mikhail Mishurovsky, the lead architect of MTS’s AI research group, gave an open lecture about the company’s key projects in the field of artificial intelligence, the collaboration with ITMO, and the specialists of the future. Pop-Science Cinema at ITMO University
Popular science movies are gradually gaining popularity both in Russia and abroad. On November 20-21, the Days of Science Cinema were held in Russia for the fourth time. New York University Professor’s Take on Future of Digital Cities
Stanislav Sobolevsky is an Associate Professor of Practice at New York University (NYU), the Head of Urban Complexity Research Group and a co-founder of the Insight Data Labs consulting studio. His research interests include machine learning and Big Data, network analysis, human movement modeling, and the theory of differential equations. During his open lecture at ITMO University, he talked about a new scientific field, urban informatics, and in particular what issues it deals with and how it helps make cities more livable.

ITMO Scientist Vladislav Gromov: We Want to Make Robots Help People, Not Replace Them
On October 14-18, the Sirius educational center in Sochi hosted as many as two prominent events for young scientists and engineers: the summit ‘Big Challenges for Society, State and Science’ and, as part of that, the Congress of Councils of Young Scientists. These proved to be particularly successful for ITMO University’s Laboratory of Intelligent Technologies in Robotics, which won the ‘Best Practices’ nomination. Vladislav Gromov, a research associate at the laboratory participating in the events, shared with ITMO.NEWS on how he liked the warm and sunny Sochi, why make robots more intelligent, and what projects the state is ready to provide funding for.

Project RENOIR and Digitalization in the News Industry
Digitalization has an impact on countless areas of human activity, changing the way we work. Mass media is no exception: news agencies’ day-to-day operations have adopted the use of artificial intelligence and other cutting-edge tech. Last week, ITMO University hosted a lecture by Aljoša Rehar, head of the digital strategy department at the Slovenian Press Agency, who spoke about digitalization in the news industry and project RENOIR, developed by members of the media and the academia (Warsaw University of Technology, Stanford University, and others). ITMO University joined the initiative in June 2018.

Emotional AI Helps Enhance Productivity and Fight Stress
According to some studies, people are only productive for less than three hours out of an eight-hour day, and the adult human concentration span is limited to 20 minutes. Research in the field of emotional artificial intelligence (AI) may help employees enhance their productivity and manage stress, which is beneficial for employers as well. Emotional AI can be applied in many other fields like agriculture and elderly care, noted Vitaly Zubchenko, a member of the NeuroNet company Expert Board. In an interview with ITMO.NEWS, he expanded on how emotional AI is developed and what business solutions work best for this field.

VK’s Head of Growth and Research On Delegating Routine Tasks to AI
Last Sunday ITMO University announced the results of the ITMO VK Olympiad. This year, more than 3,000 school students from 70 regions of Russia and CIS took part in the competition that tested their knowledge in 6 disciplines. The finalists got to attend an open lecture on data analysis and machine learning technologies by Andrei Zakonov, the head of growth and research at VK and a graduate of ITMO University. Speaking to ITMO.NEWS, he revealed how machine learning is changing Russia’s biggest social network, how school students can get started in that field and what kind of skills VK looks for in its employees.

Startup Pallium Promises Smarter AI
Pallium is a startup working on a platform for rapid learning, safe storage and easy deployment of AI models in a decentralized environment. Pallium is like a "school" where you can train your artificial intelligence or provide data or computing power to teach other AI models in exchange for rewards. Rewards are tokens that can be spent on training other models or withdrawn through an exchange. ITMO Hosts AI Academy Open Lessons
Can school students predict the outcome of e-Sports tournaments and solve serious tasks on data analysis? This week, Sberbank’s “Contribution to the Future” foundation launched the AI Academy project that aims to give every school student an opportunity to find out more about AI technologies, machine learning, and Big Data analysis, as well as develop their competencies in programming and mathematics. As part of this project, ITMO University hosted open lectures on machine learning and Big Data for 7-11 grade students.
