• Hack Your Way into ITMO: Enroll Exam-Free With DevWeek Hackathon

  Bachelor’s and Master’s students of Russian universities recently took part in DevWeek, a hackathon dedicated to software development and project management. For a week, the participants attended lectures and tackled cases brought in by experts from Alfa-Bank, Gazprom Neft, Samolet, and YADRO. Winners of the hackathon will get the opportunity to enter one of the four ITMO Master’s programs implemented in collaboration with these industrial partners without exams.

• AI Urban Planning Platform Developed at ITMO

  Prosto.R, an AI platform created by ITMO scientists, is a fast and affordable way to evaluate and predict urban development based on available data. For instance, the system can analyze urban traffic, quality of life, and environmental quality, as well as a given area’s urban development potential. Among the platform’s potential beneficiaries are governmental bodies, property developers, and investors.

• ITMO Physicists Describe New Superfast Quantum Processes in Radiation

  Researchers at ITMO University have suggested a model for the visualization of superfast dynamic processes in light-radiating particles – and used it to predict new quantum phenomena. In contrast to the new model, existing methods can only be used to describe static processes, which significantly limits research options and presents a simplified view of the studied phenomena. Using the newly developed model, it will be possible to learn more about the nature of atoms, increase the efficiency of particle accelerator experiments, and create more accurate devices for the space industry and biomedicine. The related study was published in Communications Physics.

In the future, this new structural unit will also provide expertise to other ITMO faculties.   In the latest ranking of the best Russian universities by Forbes Russia, ITMO now ranks second in St. Petersburg and seventh nationwide. The longlist included 564 universities, with only 100 making it into the final ranking.

• ITMO Researchers Succeed in Accelerating Development of Autoimmune Disease Treatments

  Researchers at ITMO have created an algorithm that will facilitate the development of medicines for autoimmune diseases. The developers used machine learning to search for inhibitors of spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk) – a protein that plays a key role in the development of immune thrombocytopenia. Using the new method, the team has identified over a hundred candidate molecules that could be used in treatments. The resulting paper was published in Journal of Cheminformatics.

• Nature Index: ITMO Ranks Second Among Russian Universities

  In the recent edition of Nature Index, ITMO took first place among St. Petersburg’s universities and the second nationwide. Nature Index is a ranking that reflects the number of publications by an institution’s scientists in leading scientific journals, as well as the university’s global scientific contributions. A total of 88 Russian universities and research organizations were evaluated in the ranking.
