AI Tool to Facilitate Mineral Processing Developed at ITMO
Students of ITMO’s Computer Technologies Laboratory have created a series of AI models for processing of clumped texture images. AI models tend to have a hard time “seeing” the borders of objects – for instance, telling one type of mineral from another – but now they can label 600 images in an hour. The new open-source solution can be used to measure the size and distribution of various objects (granulometry) in a variety of fields: examples include precious and colored metals in mining, granular materials and crystals in food or agricultural industries, as well as oil refining.

Health Data Scientist Yuri Rykov on Early Diabetes Diagnostics and AI in Medicine
In 2024, over 5.5 million cases of diabetes were registered in Russia, the majority of which (5.1 million) were type 2 diabetes. This is a tricky disease: for a long time, it can be almost asymptomatic, with many patients failing to notice that anything's amiss. Complications and even disability can be avoided with early diagnostics. Yuri Rykov, a health data scientist who has recently joined the ITMO Fellowship program, is working on a new system that will help detect pre-diabetes symptoms and stop the disease in its tracks. We spoke with Dr. Rykov about his project and the future of AI in medicine.

Everything for Victory: Lives of ITMO Scientists – Heroes of WWII
This year, Russia commemorates the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII in Europe – and its victory in the Great Patriotic War. Just like any Soviet family, ITMO also has its heroes from that terrifying time. In those days, hundreds of students, lecturers, and graduates went to war, while dozens of scientists remained in the city, enduring hunger and bombings to design and repair optical devices and systems – and even develop new technologies. In this article, we look back on three stories of such scientists, who contributed to the victory with their inventions.
